Fair enough. We have places that provide shelter, food, social workers, treatment, etc, but people are not showing up to fill the empty beds. How do we get them to show up? More money is already flowing in due to the measures that passed.

It was actually in the 90's that they started throwing people out of places like Riverview. It had nothing to with freedom or the age of Aquarius. It was the era of privatization and cutting services at the bottom while the spending spree party went on unabated for government and corporate subsidies. It was all about the big push to cut budgets that was happening at that time and to cut the deficit at the expense of the most vulnerable and helpless people in the province. They were all talking about how it was wrong to keep people with mental health problems locked up in institutions but the reality was that it was all about cost-savings through slashing mental health, hospital and social service budgets. And now they wonder why we have such a huge homeless population.

They literally threw the most mentally ill, desperate and dysfunctional folks you can imagine out on the street with no support, no health programs at at the mercy of the new punish and degrade model of welfare system which was new to Canada at the time.

Probably the most disgraceful thing done to mental health patients since forced sterilizations. But that was the new social conservative model of government that was foisted on us as fiscal conservatives began to spill their corrupted corporate ideology into Canada which had never experienced the kind of systemic homelessness that were endemic to other places stricken by neo-Liberal ideology.

Yeah right, I have talked to many, to include lawyers. The truth is, if you aren't dead in 6 months, you wait four plus, likely five years. JUST LIKE everyone else.

I hate it, and I'm a socialist. We cannot randomly choose 'impoverished' people and give stuff to them. What if I go out today and blow all my money gambling .. will you give me stuff? Probably not ... which is precisely why this is terrible, flawed 'compassion'. The most compassionate thing we can do is focus resources on those who will use them to become productive providers themselves.

They were closed for financial reasons, primarily. They're VERY expensive to operate.

The fact is these people are going to be housed one way or another. The most expensive way to do it is the er, psych hospitals or jails.

Do this because you are selfish.

    You will save money.

Absolutely not. For every drunk loafer (who'll never contribute) who gets a free house, some smart kid is prevented from accessing additional educational resources, which she/he could use to get ahead in life - perhaps even becoming a provider of charity resources.

NO charity or resources should ever be used for people who've elected the destitution they're in. Obviously.

Its always mildly entertaining to see people claim they have an easy, one size fits all, solution to homelessness. In reality, it was a good idea, but unlikely to result in reducing homelessness. Creating dependence could actually stimulate homelessness. Your claim that it works can only be made if the need for it is reduced over time.

Ok. Then you will just house them in the most expensive way possible

Here in California nobody saw that the Democrats liberal/progressive policies in the state legislature by having the welcome mat out at the border for 30 years would result in a lack of affordable housing.

Just not enough housing in California for 40 million people.

You would not be able to leave the house with all the crime this would cause.

They will eat even if they have to take it from you

Letting em starve keeps the population from expanding
