GST rise - should Turnbull honor Abbott's promise?

You missed the point. It is the COST of all those positions I think we should be looking at and the need for them. Australia is spiraling into debt because of decades of absolutely appalling management by governments. The time has come for governments to start tightening their belts.

 

The major problem with people these days, is that they have slotted themselves into a mentality of being continuous "cash-cows" for businesses and Governments, and this needs to change immediately.

There should be a mutual, respectful, symbiotic relationship between businesses and the employees, and between Governments and the constituents, but this symbiotic relationship does not have equality.

Businesses and Government treat employees and constituents as mindless and faceless "cash-cows", and not real human beings who deserve mutual respect. Without one, the other doesn't exist, and this needs to be focused on more carefully.

Employees make a business or business owner/s hundreds of times more wealthy than they become themselves, and this also needs to be examined closely. Constituents add to politicians overall wealth and status more than any wealth or status they gain, and this also needs to be examined.

We are all equal human beings with arbitrary lifetimes, and this nonsense, whereby someone or one family, who use other people as "cash cows", to accumulate $ millions and $billion in personal wealth needs to be addressed.

Where is the human fairness, and the equality of money division, whereby an employee works five days per week; eight hours per day for $30,000 per year, for someone who already has $10 billion dollars?

I think the majority of people would find it difficult spending $1 billion in an entire lifetime, even if they went shopping everyday of their lives.

Holding onto these antiquated methodologies, and pretending they are successful for the advancement of modern day humanity is shear nonsense. Humanity should be learning by its mistakes, not condemning its future by making the same mistakes from the past.

Hello everyone.

Cats any change to the GST would be taken to the next election. Don't be scared.

If it is just a 5% rise in the rate, it is fairly destructive in it's nature remembering that the GST is really a regressive tax. If they can broaden the tax base, yes this includes food, they can reap greater revenue. Sounds dangerous ? My sceptical mind says yes, but if they use some of the revenue to increase welfare and also limit exposure of lower income to compensate for the increase it may well help to push Australia into the future.

I would like to see a blanket GST across everything, say 22%. Then we abolish all other taxes, including income tax. We can then raise the basic wage by lets say $5 per hour, which will also encourage more spending, thus more revenue. We could also increase welfare payments by hundreds, again encouraging spending.

By lifting inhibitive taxes from small business and family investors we will encourage business adventure and this would result in job creation and thus more spending which equals more growth.

I could go on for hours, but then again I am not at the round table discussing the future. I also have no other agenda other than the best outcome for Australia and Australians.

What I do fear is another Frankenstein GST, just like the one we have now.
