Until the shengen deal, gun controle was effective in France. When we started to open the EU to eastern countries without border controles, a lot of weapons stolen during the fall of communism was sold to french thugs, but before EU we had much less problems. It's wasn't 100 % effective, but it was rather effective. One of the positive point is that in France, if you own a gun without legal authorization, you can be arrested. That's how they successfully counter acted a lot of terrorist acts because they searched gun in terrorist appartments. Their is still "small" terrorist attacks with knife or machete, it's limit the number of victims and knife wounds are less deadly than bullet wounds. Their is a guy who wasn't a terrorist but just became suddenly crazy who stabbed something like 30 times a guy and tried to attack some young girls. The girls sheltered in a building, the police shot him and the guy who got stabbed was saved. We maybe have as much murder attempts, but it's more easier to save people from knife wound. Furthermore, some terrorists are just madmen. It's not really hard to get a gun in France, much more harder to get a rifle, but you have to got some connections with the black market and so know some drug dealers. A lot of terrorists in France were former drug dealers. The big positive point is that an isolated teen can hardly get a gun. However a lot of french people in the countryside have 2 shots hunting rifle, but their is a lot of murders their. One of place of France were their is the most murders is corsica, but a lot of people have guns their, and this region is really special and different from the rest of the country. The other one place is the french guyane, but it's in south america.
