My daughter in law was born in Ho Chi Minh City. She has had to accept the Han Chinese orientation of our family.

Vietnam lives in China's neighborhood. Vietnam will have to accept the fact that China is dominant in China's neighborhood.

It's a pow camp. The only scandal is the liberal hype.

Are you referring to President Obama's place of incarceration of people who haven't been charged with any crime?

The US has many things to answer for. When I look at our history in south america, the middle east and the pacific rim, I see many ethical failures. But much of this has occurred with the ignorance of the average citizen. Unfortunately the truth about Guantanamo is obscured by too much media attention, opinion and assumptions overwhelm the facts, and most of us here end up tuning it out. But I would guess the coverage you experience is slanted strongly towards an anti western sentiment.

Do you have any connection with the expatriate Vietnamese community in the US? My experience with them has revealed a strong and very ethnically connected community. Perhaps this might be a way for you to learn about the complexities of north american politics.

Can you explain more about "a pow camp" and "the liberal hype" plz!

As communication, There are people with and without being charged. I want to hear what Americans say
I believe President Obama is a part in charged but most of this is belong to House of Representatives, Senate and previous term president. This is maybe a policy to prevent thread, terrorism.... May be this is right but goverments told the guards to do those inhumane things!
As communication, There are people with and without being charged. I want to hear what Americans say!

    I appreciate your opinion.
Inspite of US invaded Vietnam, I leave it to past. I'm not a person with anti western sentiment or something else. I want to know is what is true, what people expect. Unfortunately, I now alone with my own thought. Feel like everybody pragmatic. So what Vietnamese community in the US did you experience with?

If the Vietnamese didn't want to kill US soldiers then why did they? Were they afraid of the US...if so...Why?

The story have come with you for 30 years, it hard to chage for a while.

We were afraid, afraid of losing liberty, justice, family not the American imperialism. Of couse, we will do anything to protect these. PATRIOTISM make us defeat invanders, not fear.

This is very dangerous while you kill someone because you afraid of them( you should think carefully about this).

Enemy combatants captured out of uniform have to be placed somewhere. Under international law they can be executed for being out of uniform and fighting against our forces. Instead we put them in pow camp. The liberals made more out of it then it really was.

The remaining prisoners at Guantanamo are terrorists. There is nothing illegal or immoral about holding them there. As far as military prisons go, it's fairly humane treatment.

The controversy, such as it is, is that they are being held per the Geneva Convention as unlawful combatants, since they were civilians who were not serving as part of the military of any nation-state. Worldwide there are quite a few people as well as people in the US who don't accept that status for the prisoners, and think they should be treated as criminal defendants, and therefore have all of the rights that our system gives people accused of of traditional crimes.

Yes...and one wonders how many POWs, and dissidents are being held covertly in Vietnam today. It should be obvious to most of these non-Americas that the reason they know so much about America's faults is that we are free to criticize without being sent into some solitary hole somewhere to rot.

Well...Apparently you found link after link with stories, videos etc. regarding America and Vietnam. Seems you know quite a lot. Americans don't hate Vietnam or Vietnamese. Unfortunately, world political power struggles have a way of trapping regular people into struggles they may or may not agree with. In America, we are free to protest and did so which caused the US to pull out of your country.

In regard to politics, how does a 1-party system work? Can you only vote Communist now? How do your government officials solve conflicts? Can you openly criticize your government with no problem?

I think countries like China and the old USSR's biggest problems, are that they have authoritarian regimes and dictators.
Almost 100% of all authoritarian regimes and dictators are insane, self centered, and close minded.
They think more about keeping power, and their personal image, than they think about freedom and their country.
I believe a capitalist country that had a dictator or a authoritarian regime, would still see the same problems as China or the old USSR.
I think that authoritarian regimes and dictators, are the biggest enemy of freedom, and the biggest enemy of a great country.

I assumed Vietnam had a dictator, but I just learned you do not.
I thought the following link was interesting, because it said Vietnam does much better than the other countries around it.
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080904193955AAFgpmV

There are many different kinds of socialism, and I think we both see socialism in different ways.
At this moment I would say Vietnam needs more capitalism, to provide goods and services that your present government does not provide. I believe capitalism is good because it allows anyone to create goods and distribute them.

But I also think Vietnam needs more scientists to control the country. Because scientists can see ways to help many people.
My opinion at this moment is that Vietnam needs capitalism, but it also needs scientific socialism.

When a country is 100% capitalist, it allows business owners to control the government. And these business owner leaders do not care about the people, they only care about making more money.

And thank you for educating me about China. I now see I was giving China too much respect.

I believe that very few countries have good governments. Countries like Switzerland, Germany, and Denmark have good governments.
I believe these countries have "social-capitalist" governments.

I strongly hope that one day Vietnam joins the above list of countries, that have excellent governments.
(But according to the American who wrote in my link, Vietnam already has the best government, of all the countries in their area.)
I did not intend to confuse you with my above statement, I just wanted to say it.
    Chad.

In Vietnam, rage growing over loss of land rights
Jan 31,`13 -- Faced with a group of farmers refusing to give up their land for a housing project, the Communist Party officials negotiating the deal devised a solution: They went to a bank, opened accounts in the names of the holdouts and deposited what they decided was fair compensation. Then they took the land.

    Great question!

1/ How a single party works

This must be a long answer so i will shorten and highlight the differents with US
Every candidate for any position must be a member of our Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).
People elect Congress each 5 year( about 150 member of Congress)
The president is elected by Congress( not by citizen).
General Secretary of the CPV is elected by Central Committee of_the CPV.
Central Committee of the CPV is elected by Congress.
Citizens indirectly elect all of them!

2/ To solve a big problem, Congress, Central Committee of the CPV have a meeting. Member of congress will collect questions of citizens then ask goverment. Citizens can send a letter to complain,....

3/ First, you must to distinguish CPV( the base of Goverment) and Goverment.
If you criticize Goverment for something they did't do well, no problem.
If you criticize CPV is wrong, not modern, not advance, bla bla..., this is a totally different story. You must to have support of almost country, prove that you have a form of goverment better than now. You also must be famous because of your dedication, your sacrifice for country.

President Ho Chi Minh is the greatest of Vietnam and CPV is the party he established.
If you meet someone have bad word with President Ho Chi Minh, you can immediately conclude this is a bad person to Vietnam and to the world.

If you wonder something, just go on!
