I bought a place on Charlotte harbor a couple of years ago. I went down there two weeks ago to put up the hurricane shutters and get my boat out of the water. Glad I did! Looks like it's headed right for us!
National Hurricane Center updates https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at5+shtml/144746.shtml?cone Still hoping Dorian tracks north - we need the rain Virginia...
Is Dorian supposed to cross Florida and strengthen and hit the pan handle and New Orleans or is it expected to go north after hitting land?
They're not really sure yet although most of the models have Dorian pushing north into Georgia, etc. There's a High and Low pressure system that will help determine the track of the storm and they're still trying to figure out where they will lead the storm.
Thank you. After I asked, I saw the models in the posts. I'd heard on the news, I think yesterday or the day before that it might go across. I'll tell you, I'd move out during hurricane season. That's pretty damn frightening. Hope everyone makes out alright.
Dorian could still cut across Florida and into the Panhandle which I hope it won't do - after what happened with Michael last year those folks could use a break. Hurricanes are no joke, for sure. I've been through some pretty bad ones - Camille being the worst - and they're nothing to take lightly.
I bunkered down in our little block house during Irma. No power but a freezer full of ice and beer. Sitting in the dark or laternlight with just a radio for news. It spawned a tornado 5 blocks away. Sounded like a train running thru my yard. I think what comes before the storm almost sucks as bad. Incessant news coverage, everyone running out the last several days emptying stores of all water, bread, batteries, etc. Hwy 70 runs thru town here, one of few roads crossing the state from coast to coast so all the east coasters are on the Hwy, passing thru town. Wal Mart shelves already starting to show the last minute hoarding of goods.
I know right? I got a freezer full of awesome in the garage down there, and I'm 800 miles away. I'll probably be going down there on Tuesday to clean up the mess and fire up the generator, if need be.
Port Charlotte? I'm just up the road a piece in the bustling metropolis of Arcadia. We have to go to Port Charllote for alot of things you cant get in town here. I love it here, nice small town, all 4.3 sq miles of it!
One of the weirdest experiences I had with a hurricane was during Hurricane Isabel in 2003. In all the years I've lived in Virginia that was the first and only one I've seen drive up the Chesapeake Bay and when I saw the track I knew we were screwed. At the time I lived 100 miles inland in Richmond, VA and when the storm showed up you could smell the salt water in the air. After she beat the crap out of us we had no water in the city for a couple of days and then went about a week without power. If I hadn't been prepared for the worst it would have totally sucked - we were totally stocked up on ice, water, food, cooking fuel and most importantly beer.
Hunker down....get supplies, fuel up, head up to Floribama state line, or Georgia, lay low, hope it isn't too bad!!
Latest TV shows it crossing Fl and into the Gulf but the only thing dependable about these things is their unpredictabillity.
I think they said prepare for 7 days. Tornadoes at night?? Yikes, no way. I almost soiled myself thinking about it. I was living in the south years ago and one came through pretty close, but not that close. Those tornadoes, are they always in front or also behind the hurricane?
A gas grill works great for morning coffee. We have a 6 ft wooden fence all the way around our house that has seen better days. I expected Irma to take half of it, I was amazed, we lost not one panel. Fences around town? Looks like many took a hit. I saw a wooden powerpole snapped like a toothpick, 6 ft down from the top. I bet that took a tornado.
Too bad. I was going to vote for Atlantic Coast all the way to the New Jersey and New York shorelines. With high tide and storm in synchrony, flooding streets in Manhattan. Maybe next time. Moi of California where we don't get no hurricanes, hardly a tornado . . .
Not sure but the North east side of it is always strongest. The worst of Irma was in the overnight hours. When the eye passed by, I went out for a peak, the road in front of my house looked like a river, literally. My entire yard was 5 inches deep for several days, house started to flood and would have, had the back half not fallen apart. It was an eerie silence that night...and then the frogs fixed that, thousands upon thousands croaking. Like my house was magically dropped in a swamp. I shall forever remember it as night of the frogs.
I'd like it to go North(away from us). My other half uses oxygen at night, if the power goes out we will have to run the generator for it
Ever been in a hurricane dude? You need liquor and red wine. How the hell are you going to keep the beer cold? Also, good luck dealing with the beer poops without plumbing if it’s bad enough. Give me some scotch and some Dark Horse and game’s on, Mother Nature.
lol, really? Born and raised in Fl, seen a few in my nearly 40 years here. Last one that hit here on 9/10/17 was Irma. You fill every spot you can, in the freezer with bottled water. Now you have ice and drinking water as an outage goes on. I still had ice, 5 days later.
I’m messing with you. I’m from California. I’ve been in two hurricanes since I joined the AF and always relied on the room-temperature stuff and filled my freezer full of store-bought cheesecake. Where in Florida?
