Yeah, that sound is the worst part of a Hurricane when you're somewhere safe. Screams like a banshee for hour after hour. This is when the tables turn and the "preppers" laugh at the people that called them paranoid.
I worked in the South West desert. To keep things nice and cool in a cooler, for a week and more, I used a brick of dried ice, put a towel over it and than regular water ice. Kept vegies, meat and beer cold for over a week.. Vegies I always wrapped into small towels, so they would not freeze.
I noticed Publix (a grocer chain in the SE) is selling dry ice now, bet they are sold out now. Gas station by my house was sold out of gas, a bit ago.
Fort myers here. Charley was a bad surprise for us. At least there are no excuses this time for not being prepared
Yeah the damn vultures cleaned out Publix. About the only thing I couldn't pick up today that I wanted to was a refill on my spare propane. Damn vultures got all those too but new trucks will be coming in. Landshark was BOGO so I got to stock up on beer as well!
The harbor is beautiful I just spent six hours on it on Sunday and got burnt to a crisp. Have friends that live off Edgewater
We just got a Publix AND a Harbor Freight tools, a couple years back. That's a big deal for our little town. Sorta like Magnolia St Seafood and grill being one of the top 40 rated eateries in Fl. If you ever pass thru, I recommend the fried oyster sammich! Charley was forecast to go right up into Tampa Bay. What a disaster that would of been. You should come to Arcadia to hunt fossils in the Peace River during dry season. Mark Renz is a friend of mine and lives in Ft Myers, author of several books and a business, guiding fossil hunts. Irma brought me a bounty of fossils, the Peace river was only a ft or so under the historical record. Great for exposing fossils.
Yeah I've been up to Arcadia all the way from laishley Marina in Punta Gorda on jet skis, we used to stop and fill up our tanks at that little Park in Arcadia along the river in and then haul ass through the twisties up there, good times. Also I remember a little boat ramp off a bridge that we'd do now and then. Never thought about fossils, interesting idea. The Peace River was always my favorite boating spot especially on the skis because we could handle the shallow water.
It's pretty high now. I live about 5 blocks from that park, Veterans Park. I used to jump off the bridge, all the time. Peace River is world famous for fossils. You maybe describing the boat ramp at the same park. Ring a bell? Railroad trestle about 2 miles upriver Current Hwy 70 bridge, first pic was the original bridge about a 100 yards upriver from it, now called the 'walking bridge' it leads into the park
@Spim This the boatramp? Opposite end of the park from the walking bridge. After Irma, the water would have been up to window, on those cars. Flooding after Irma at the Peace River Campground, nextdoor (formerly a KOA campground)
Forecast to landfall as a 140MPH Cat 4 just south of Port St. Lucie (**** me). I'm starting to think this will be a low end 5 by landfall as their nothing but 90F water and low shear going ahead.
**** me too, way closer than I want to see it I'm basically in a straight line over from there. But there is still plenty of time for a change of course.
I don't envy all y'all in Florida. Thursday was the 14th anniversary of Katrina. I was pretty much at ground zero for that one. Camille, too. Still early but just saw a graphic on Accuweather that shows it turning North once it gets overland in Florida. Looks like this one's gonna be a bad one for somebody. Stay safe!
It's not like he is the only one that ever speculated on the viability of that. Problem is, the energy of a hurricane would laugh at our feeble efforts. Fallout, notwithstanding.
Iv'e got weed, beer and water and food. All BS asides, my other half requires Oxygen at Carpet bomb with MOABs! Whistling past the cemetery here, I live in the danger zone here.
I miss the Publix BOGO on beer and wine. I never heard of that until I was in FL. Their fried chicken and two cases of beer for the price of 1. Brilliant.
That’s what happened to us last year. In a few hours Michael intensified and changed track, then took out our base.
That's bad news. I was wondering about the water temps. I've heard some meteorologists starting to compare Dorian to Harvey...
I am in the cone of death, about 40 miles South of the center (in Ft Lauderdale). Will begin preps tonight.
I hope so too. I will pray for rain in Virginia, and no rain in South Florida. You can have all 18 inches they predict here, and the 10 ft surge too. The other problem we have is the king tide, which brings the water way up even of there is no surge, so it the storm hits while the king tide is up, the surge will be very bad.
