I believe the trade wars will go on indefinitely from this point on. The reason is the world economy is based on an unsustainable model of debt which at some point must be reconciled. As governments continue to run ever increasing deficits, they must consistently increase taxes to service the debt. This means less disposable income for the people and constant inflation lowering the standards of living. Governments cannot accept the blame for the reckless spending, so they must pressure other countries to alleviate some of the burden by granting them favorable trade policy. The problem is that as the situation gets worse, it causes instability among the populations of the affected countries. The governments must make scapegoats of other countries in order to shift blame away from themselves. This conditions continues and worsens until it ultimately ends in war. It is a cycle that plays out time after time in history.

Well...China cannot be contained by the US or anyone. China has momentum in nearly everything, they have intelligence, and they have labor, and they are a developing nation. The USA can pound their chest from a political perspective but it's not going to change much the economy and growth of China. In areas of manufacturing/services, in which US companies can no longer compete with the rest of the world, we need to move on and focus on things we do well, do competitively. Tariffs and chest-poundidng are kids games that can get some attention in the short term but can't imagine long-term benefits? Trump supporters should not be so naive...

You pass along the costs. If Levis has to pay $12 FOB instead of 10 they have to pas along that cost. Standard margins for an existing product would be about 30% so their selling price to the middle man will now be 15.60 vs $13.00 before. the middle man will now add His 30% or 20.30 (instead of 17?.) The retailer will then add 30% on to make it $26 instead of $22 and increase of 4 bucks for a pair of pants. or we could just keep letting them close businesses in the US. The more direct the supply chain as in amazon the less impact of the tariffs on the final price.

Again, so we continue to let them steal our technology? Ignore our Patents? not open thier markets to us in the same manner we have opened ours to them. Trump supporters? I dislike the man intensely. Look at my sig below.

Placing tariffs on everything Chinese is not going to do anything about intellectual property theft. China has cracked down on this however they have the same problem the US and others have which is enforcement. Can they do better...absolutely. And tariffs can get their attention but any fixes are going to be very long term...meanwhile how many will suffer from the tariffs? I don't see how strong-arm gamesmanship tactics can lead to anything positive and long-term? The world's trading partners need to establish a solid coalition to deal with all of these issues, and the coalition must be democratic, not dictated by peckerwood Trump...

Bullshit, they shoot people for smoking pot and y0u say they can't stop intellectual theft. What about the law saying that foreign investment has to be joinet owned. How do you stop theft then?

Look at the trade imbalance, they need us much more then we need them.

Only about 4% of China's economy are exports to the United States. Note to Trump: China is too big now for us to think in terms of squeezing them without the help of allies.

A couple of decades should be enough.

Most of those allies are on their kneepads in front of the Chinese for the same reason the Democrats and Wall Street Republicans are.

We set up the TPP as a bulwark against China, then President Fatso Dumbass came along and pulled us out of the trade area. Of course, Trump's duped followers think he's a genius.

Most of them were counting on U.S. leadership in dealing with China and they (and we) got the Orange Oaf. Do you really think we can lever up on China by ourselves?

If it only lasts months, it'll be astounding. We've been getting F'd in the A for decades. Fixing will not be quick. But fix it we must.

The Orange Oaf could try working with our allies for a change instead of trying to lever up on them all alone when we buy less than 5% of what they produce.

    Define 'ally.'

I don't see someone trying to screw me over as an 'ally'...

Yeah, we buy 4% of Chinese output and threatening to stop buying their stuff will make them come to us, hat in hand.

Trump might be successful if he worked with our allies, but China's economy is too large for us to go it alone.

Not necessarily. Besides, what they sell to us is less than 5% of their GDP.
