just thought I would share the excitement here and I’m sure some will attack homeschooling without hesitation. However keep in mind that some of our greatest historical figures were homeschooled, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt just to name a few. Some modern day famous people as well such as Taylor Swift, Simone Biles, and Venus Williams. People can most definitely still be successful as homeschooled individuals.

The teachers Union in Utah is far from excited about this. Just as an example I know a gal that homeschools all her kids and has been for quite sometime. She now will be paid for it. I know very intelligent teachers aids that could quit and now make more money homeschooling their own kids. This will benefit those who choose to put in extra leg work and benefit the private school industry. It will also benefit teachers because a raise for teachers was also in this bill.

    Good going Utah! :applause::applause::applause:

Great stuff... up to a point. Definitely good at the grammar school level. Not sure how your average mom would do helping teach high school subjects like Chemistry, Physics and various languages though.

Homeschool can be cheap early on. You can get by with some pencils, paper, and flashcards.
High School and above definitely require public schools, but students can also go to college at age 18 and take remedial classes to get up to the college level.

And in my home state of New York, college students can get a GED equivalent (no longer called GED) just by taking classes toward their degree, and getting a certain number of credits in certain topics (math, English, etc.).

Tell that to the people I mentioned that were homeschooled. There are programs online you can buy that assist in homeschooling as well. They have all the topics you mentioned and help for a more one in one learning atmosphere

"but it also provides parents $8,000 per student per year in state funds to attend a private school or use the money for homeschooling."

wow, so a poor family of 10, gets 80k a year to home school

hear that poor families... move to Utah... have lots of kids

Back in the day it was normal that the wife remains unemployed at home, because the man was able to provide the entire family. Those days are totally gone, and only the lucky few can afford this. Taylor Swift parents, were rich. Simone Biles was adopted by her grandparents so they were probably retired, and Serena went to a public highschool after she got some homeschooling.

You’re making excuses. He point is that for those who can do it, it most definitely is possible. There are other big names that have been homeschooled, quite a few more. Look it up, you’ll be impressed. Elon musk also pretty much homeschools his kids…. Well kind of…

It's no excuse. About everybody can't afford to homeschool their kids.

And I told you how them big names did it. They were either rich, or taught by people who are probably retired, or mostly not true.

Well for those who can’t afford to homeschool their kids they still have options under this new law. They can go to private school or use the funds to help pay for homeschooling

Aha, if you can't afford homeschool, than your option is to pay for a private school, or... or... homeschool.

I don't think you have thought this one through.

Oh no, they can also take public school. This law doesn’t make public school illegal and it won’t do away with public school either. It just gives people other options.

I don't know if you thought about it, but if a parent homeschools their kids at home, they don't have to pay for daycare.

I don't know if that makes up for the loss of one income, but maybe the uncounted unemployed really are a parent staying at home.

You can't be serious--pencils, paper and flashcards? Kids need to be inspired, too. Look up Bloom's Taxonomy.
Why would you wait until you're 18 to start high school classes?
It's common enough for people to go to college without graduating from high school.

Or it will lead to bad parents “homeschooling” their crotch goblins for $8k per child per year.

And y’all think food stamps at a few hundred dollars per week per family is bankrupting the nation? Unless they put into place some pretty strenuous testing standards it’s about to get interesting.

Good grief. You have an MBA and come up with this crap?

Find a good private school, get a job and pay for your kids to have a decent education.

What "crap" are you referring to? You confuse me. I'm not used to adults talking like playground kids.
My eldest son went to public schools.... graduated high school before attending college...took the SAT's. He's a Cornell and Fordham Law grad. I'm sure no one with a similar history failed to get a high school diploma.

Yeah, well don't get too excited because $8000 isn't enough for a poor parents to find a good private school without having to top up the voucher. The $8000 is free money for upper-income folks who were going to send their kid to a private school anyway. Most lower- and middle-income folks get zip because the voucher for them is akin to tossing a life preserver too far away from a drowning man.
Homeschooling is not superior to a good private school.
No, not good going. Utah is sticking yet another nail in the coffin of the middle-class on behalf of rich folks.

Vouchers? Yes, but only if they enable lower-income folks to escape the public system.

may increase the population in Utah if you're giving parents 8k a year per child to home school them

some may become baby mamas for life

the question is, what happens when all these people have children for the $$$ and the State realizes they can't afford it anymore?

This: "It will interesting to see how it works out. This may start the ball rolling on getting america back on track."

An $8k voucher is a gift to upper-income people who were likely to send their kid to a private school anyway. It's well short of enough for a decent private school.

We already have lower- and middle-income folks sinking beneath the waves.

Oh, I'm sorry. I believe I turned over my teacup on your doily. :)
So, you sent him to school. My daughter went to public school and is a bank vice president.

If the public school in your neighborhood isn't good enough... transfer schools, move to a new community, or send him/her to a decent private school. The latter is what my niece did with her two girls.

I'm reminded of people who hide their dead parents and grandparents to keep collecting Social Security checks. Who knows what fiendish ways people might find to exploit this?

for a woman, all they have to do is sleep around with many men, have lots of kids, easy $$$ - 8k per kid plus all that child support as a side hustle

what could go wrong.... lol... soon Utah will have an influx of population and no longer be a Mormon majority State...
