Short of yelling Fire in a crowed theater, everyone should be free to say anything they want. If someone is "offended" tuff bounce live with it.

I don't think anyone is saying that speech must be allowed as a mechanism to perpetrate other crimes.

For instance, if you set up a shotgun to shoot a child in the head if you uttered the phrase "unions rule!", that doesn't mean you can argue free speech. You are using speech as a mechanism for a separate crime.

Nobody is saying that you couldn't say "unions rule!" Under normal circumstances. Similarly, you cannot yell "fire!" for the same reason you cannot shoot in the air and tell everyone to get out.

The speech itself has nothing to do with it.

People have said something or done something 20, 30, 40 years ago and especially if they are running for political office if that something is deemed bad and can infringe on a candidates character or used to defeat him it will be brought back up. But for the most part, I doubt that it makes much of a difference, those for a candidate will still be for him and those against a candidate against him, probably more reinforced to be against him.

As for the average Joe, something I did or said years ago in the past means nothing. That is as long as it wasn't against the law or harmed someone. Do we judge someone on what they are today, say today or do we continue to judge that someone on what they said 30 years ago or did way back then?

I am all in favor of free speech, even if that means having someone call me a ton of nasty names. I view political correctness as an attempt to curb free speech or to silence the opposition politically. If one thinks I'm a such and such, let them state it. I would much rather know what a person thinks than have that person stay quiet and smile at me thinking I am one nasty such and such, but due to political correctness or curbs on free speech he doesn't state it.

Quite correct. One has every right to say whatever nonsense one wishes. One is not however guaranteed an audience.

People who advocate social pressure as a means to create de facto rules about what can and cannot be said are also the same people seem to disagree with political correctness, which is basically the exact same thing as social pressure.

One way to look at it I suppose, but I always felt a person should say what they feel and think. Then let the chips fall where they may.

Actually, calling "politically correct" as many do... can also be an attempt to shut down "opposition".

    Please, check THIS out.

Well, that may work well in personal circles... but such absolute candor isn't fit for all audiences.

I was in the military for 35+ years. I gave a LOT of briefings and dealt with people from all over America. You learned that saying what you may "feel or "think", wan't always appropriate or professional. Keeping people level-headed and working together required more social-skills than just blurting out whatever you might have been compelled to say. So many lives were on the line, that stupidity and carelessness weren't tolerated so much.

The redeeming part is that you live in a country that allows it.

There was no chance of a physical confrontation. I knew he would back down.

And if you want to be a Woody Allen type character and talk about feelings, go ahead. I react differently when my young children are verbally assaulted.

Wanting to outlaw flag burning, wanting to open up libel laws to sue publications for negative press, suing or threatening to sue people for negative press, for (correctly) saying that he owned minority interest in a real estate venture, for (correctly) saying that his casino will probably fail, even for telling jokes about his parentage.

So on top of being an authoritarian... you're also tell unthruths

    Here's your quote from earlier:

I don't see anything in there about verbally assaulting your kids.
I imagine this is a public setting, 100's of people around.... and you just so happen to be near to some dooshbags talking crap about their girlfriend and sex. Instead of moving away; ignoring it or any other options you had on the table... you go right for physical threat.

Free speech is free so long as you're saying things that I like in my presence ... That's your motto.... And like I've said for the 4th time now, pretty much sums up this thread.

They are if what you are trying to curtail with those suits is free speech, which is exactly what Trump was doing. Even if you were correct, I didn't limit my remarks to civil suits.

He was less than 2 feet (24 inches) away from my kids' ears. He told his buddy in a loud voice that he couldn't wait to get home and f--- his girlfriend, eat her p----, screw her from behind until she cried, and then make her suck his p----.

This was told in front of a 7 year old boy and an 11 year old girl. I guess you would put up with it. What a wuss. Are you pajama boy?

Sorry the only (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing about free speech are leftist whining about the fact that Trump won't let them have a free pass at him.

Then you haven't been paying attention to the thread. My first post was in response to a Trump supporter (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing about free speech.

Both liberals and conservatives care about free speech. It is sort of one of the cornerstones of our nation.

If liberals care about free speech, why don't they let conservative speakers on college campuses?

I called you out on your lie
I called you out on your stance on free speech
Let the forum see that up to this point you have not provided a counter to either of the above.

Instead you continue to try and insult me... without knowing one iota about me.

You call yourself Texas Republican but you're posting like a liberal - attacking a poster's character instead of their points; appealing to emotion by bringing your kids into the argument when that has no bearing on the point being made.

By all means..... continue to play your games.
My point still stands - Free speech is free so long as you speak how I want you to speak, when I want you to speak, where I want you to speak.
That's on clear display here. The fact that you're continuing to defend just proves it for me.

Whatever. I don't care what some clown on the internet says.

It appears you're obsessed. I'll leave you alone now, but keep on posting if you'd like.
