She meant nothing to YOU...except a cudgel to attack the Administration with.

If Cigna or Wellpoint had refused her the transplant....you wouldn't have given a rat's ass.

Oh, God! By this "logic" no one should ever get an organ transplant.

Are you saying that poor health care coverage is the cause of cystic fibrosis? I guess you are saying that you want Obamacare to force organ donation. Good luck with that.

    - - - Updated - - -

    No, I'm glad she's alive.

No, I'm a big believer in charity, charity hospitals, and publicity driven donations. Haven't you ever donated towards a sick child's medical fund?

But, this is a case of the gov't preventing a cure.

So the judge ordered a change TO THE SYSTEM?

If so, I have no complaint. If not, someone got screwed out of life and you need to acknowledge the cost of your 'victory'.

The desperation is palpable. They are in the awkward position of being against a child's survival simply because they refuse to abandon Obama and their shared pseudo-religion of secular humanist socialism.

Just as the death cult of Islam can justify their prophet's sex with a 9 year old, the progressive death cult can justify this.

There is a very easy fix to the organ donation problem. Just make organ donation the default: you would have to carry an organ non-donation card in order to be exempted (non-adults would be another matter, as they don't have the rights and responsibilities of adults).

You do understand that younger people go to the top of the list, right?

And every 11-15 years she will need new lungs wasting them for someone who don't need replacements due to an underlying disease. Each procedure costing a fortune I would have excluded her from consideration for lungs period for the greater good those four to five people that get lungs and can keep them.

They change them, but the basic system was formed back in 1984, and it consists of medical professionals. Quite frankly the judge got it wrong. He opted to rule in favor of emotion instead of cold hard facts. Should there be an appeals process, I think so. It would definitely be best to double check the initial findings to make sure something wasn't overlooked.

But these people on the board are not cold hearted, but trying to make the best use of what organs are available to try and make sure each transplant is as successful as possible. When you throw in more exotic methods, or go against proven policy, you run the risk of not only killing one patient, but 2 at least because you screwed someone else out of a chance to live.

I wouldn't want to be on that panel, it would be heartbreaking to see these cases come through and have to deny someone because they aren't the best match, especially a kid. But sometimes you have to put logic ahead of emotion and do what's best so that the largest number of potential transplant patients survive.

The point of the ONUS panel is to try and get the best chance possible for survival and to make sure that a very limited supply isn't wasted. Quite frankly, this poor girl was not the best possible chance for survival. She has a chronic disease that could flair up again and she'll be right back where she was.

Would you say that she should be at the top of the list when 1-2 years down the road, maybe even sooner, her lungs are destroyed again due to her genetic condition? Do you even know what Cystic Fibrosis is? It's where the body secretes mucus that clogs the lungs, and causes infections, (also can affect the pancreas, and other symptoms) so you tell me, was this a good idea? That someone is probably going to waste these lungs, when someone else might live longer?

    http://www.sfgate.com/health/article/Lung-transplant-patients-face-tough-odds-3998899.php

Nice article that describes the real survival rates of lung transplant patients.

The fact is, lung transplants are risky, and tend to fail in a short amount of time anyhow, chances are this girl will be right back on the waiting list in a year or less, when some other candidate that might have been a better match could have survived longer. But we'll never know since some retarded judge decided to take matters into his own hands and ignore the science of the situation.

The judge killed an adult who could have had four or five years extra. The child will be lucky to get half of that.

A clean calculus of this would be nice. There's a lot of (Fox) noise obscuring honest assessment.

The child has an aggressive variant of CF. To reach the end stages normally takes a patient till their early twenties, she's not even a teen. A transplant isn't a cure, just a replacement of terminally damaged lungs with fresh ones, and her CF will start attacking the new lungs (Adult ones, trimmed down to fit a child's chest cavity) as soon as they are put in. Two or three years is about the most that can be hoped for. Then what?

her case just makes me sad, it's hard to think about what she is going through, and has yet to go through... how does one decide who deserve a few more years, I am glad that is not a decision I have to make

Let's see if I understand this.

The policy relating to pediatric lung transplants was instituted by MEDICAL, NOT ADMINISTRATION authorities.

The republithugs, telling their usual lies, have been, for years, screaming about non-existent government DEATH PANELS which would take medical decisions out of medical hands.

This policy was established by MEDICAL, NOT GOVERNMENT OR ADMINISTRATION authorities, based on MEDICAL, NOT GOVERNMENT OR ADMINISTRATION criteria.

Make no mistake. I'm glad the child got the transplant and I wish her well.

This notwithstanding, the resident liars and/or idiots in the republithug party are blaming the administration. There seems to be a certain lack of consistency (and sanity) here, not that consistency or sanity or, for that matter, simply honesty, has ever hindered the republithugs or the cretins who support them.

This is just another justification (as if more justification was needed) for my belief that republicans are scum.

I am very happy for this little girl and her family.

But some other poor soul didn't get that lung- probably an adult that the lung would have fit completely. Some other family may soon be mourning a loss because they didn't get a lung.

For those who rant about 'death panels'- well now we have 'death judges'- because as long as there are fewer lungs than there are recipients, someone or someones are going to have to decide who gets the transplant- and who dies.

And for some people- its just another excuse to attack Obama.

The organ transplant rules were established under the Bush administration, not that it matters since Obama allows it to remain in effect. I just wish people would get their facts straight. Just like Obama phones, that were created by Newt and his gang giving corporate welfare handouts. Oh well why interupt a good talking point even if it is total BS. :wall:

I agree- for every winner in such a decision, there is necessarily one or more losers. For every family thrilled that their love one survives a few years longer, there are families who will be mourning not getting a transplant in time.

I wouldn't want that kind of responsibility- kudo's to those who step up and are willing to lose their sleep over such decisions.

Thank you, this needed to be said.

All this proves is that if you throw a big enough snit, the rules everyone else has to follow don't apply to you.

So one is left to wonder, who may die or may have already died because this girl went around the rules?

Sorry, I don't see what this story has to do with president obama.

You are connecting dots that don't exist in order to play politics Don unless I am missing something.

So we should follow a status quo, simply because its established, even if its wrong?

    Got it.

Maybe we should have applied the same principles to Rosa Parks?

This is what some of you call "progress"?

So why don't you care about the person that died or will die so they could make an excemption for that girl. Do you whinners know that people, children included, die every day waiting for an organ transplant. Must be nice to have enough connections to jump in line and live, but you might want to keep in mind someone paid the ultimate price for your little game. Shame on you and others for making this a political issue, the system was not set by Obama and is not related to Obamacare, it has to do with only so many organs being available and the medical community setting some rules so that it is as fair as possible for all those that need them, so are you an organ doner or just a whiner?

The better question should be why would the person that could potentially die since she got the transplant be more important than her?

She was waiting much longer than people on the adult list, how is that fair?

If you guys want to have a reasonable and logical discussion, you need to start being objective and honest.

    Name calling?

    Classy.

What are you, 12 years old?

No, you go through the proper channels to change the rules.
