However, to study history and analyze the different outcomes when we know all the facts may help us make better choices in the future.

For instance, knowing what we know now, if you or I went back and became Hitler we probably would have won the war, the US and Britain would have sued for peace, and Europe, Asia, and probably most of Africa would be under Nazi control.

If we wanted to do that.

So we can apply that knowledge to current or future conflicts.

 

Of course, many powerful people in England tried suing for peace with Hitler. Those members of the later banned Right Club were over-flowing with members of the aristocracy and, I understand, royals too - although you'll never find a full and complete roster of their membership (hat has been published claimed to be the full roster but wasn't). The curious "accidental" death of Prince George in a Flying Boat in Scotland in 1942, eclipses a far deeper story, I understand.

But I hear what you say. The spanner in the works in respect to intelligent decision making is that we humans are psychologically fragile beings who are subject to all sorts of illogical thinking and emotions / passions. Until we have developed a more advanced psychology as a species I don't see things changing that much in the near-ish future. Sadly.

If you examine wars it often seems that the only logical thought to have in regard to the loser is. "What were they THINKING?" and WWII is one of these. Hitler went to war because he was bankrupt and needed to conquer and loot someone else besides his own Jews. He had some initial successes and thought he was the next Alexander, but he was really just insane with good help.

If German Generals had been in charge and IF the USA was not plowing equipment into Russia, Germany would have defeated Russia. This would have included then German generals bringing Ukraine armies into the German effort in exchange for a promise of freedom from Stalin - which Hitler refused to allow. This would have avoided some of the most bitter fighting Russia the German army faced plus added a million troops that switched sides. But for Ukrainian resistance Germany would have rolled across Russia quickly.

There are a lot of what-ifs about WW2.
