French-speaking music is awesome -- especially the "oldies" or the so-called "chansons françaises". I like "Oldies" in general, but the Anglophones are rather "cheesy" to be quite honest.

The French ones are rather "raw" and go straight to the heart -- not to mention the artists lay their entire soul in the song too. The passion just burst from the screen.

    It's utterly amazing!

Oh, I'm not always going to give a translation because some of the lyrics would be deemed "inappropiate" for puritan English-speaking folks! :)

Everything is allowed as long as it in French (so post some great African music too!).

This is going to be awesome!

"Ne Me Quitte Pas" means as much as "Don't Leave Me" -- the clip has English subtitles. You need to double-click it, so you can watch it on YouTube.

Stromae, it all seems to be about drugs but it makes me want to float away.

Some of you maybe know "France Gall" since she won Eurovision back in 1965 when she performed "Poupée de cire, poupée de son" written by Serge Gainsbourg.

Anyhow, in 1987 she released an hommage to the American wonder girl Ella Fitzgerald.

In 2008 the Belgian singer "Kate Ryan" covered the song and it was a succes throughout Europe.

Axelle Red is one of the most famous Belgian artists alive. Especially in Francophone countries like France, Canada, Switzerland, etc.

She's also a UNICEF-ambassador since the late 1990's, she also received the highest honour for cultural achievements from the French Republic, indeed, she became "Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres".

She also sung the official song of the World Cup of '98 -- together with the Senegalese singer Youssou N' Dour.

So, one of her most famous songs is "Parce Que C'est Toi": it's brilliant!

It's possibly the greatest song to celebrate love, that I know of!

Here are the lyrics, first in French and then in English.

Is Plastic Bertrand allowed? Seriously, I still like Ça plane pour moi even though I have very minimal knowledge of the French language.

There was also a gorgeous song a few years ago by a female French singer, something about her being a woman (bit obvious), I like the French version better than the English one, French is a lovely language to my ear, right up there with Latin American Spanish but that's another issue.

I grew up with Francoise Hardy (at least, with her songs!) in the 60's, and I always loved her voice.

I understand she still has some success in France, Luxemburg and Belgium, and it is well deserved.

Jacques Brel was my hero! His songs are still my favorite. He was not only a singer, a song writer, he was a real poet! In fact, his lyrics can be read without ever knowing there is a music attach to it as beautiful poems. I translated a couple of his songs in English ("les Vieux" is one of them).

I had the good fortune of seeing him live when I was about 15 years old. He was incredible on stage.

I do not know of ANY English singer who has ever put as much soul, passion, sadness at times, into songs as Jacques Brel.

That's a good one. Not sure if it can be posted here though.;)

Going back a FEW years, this is one I am very fond of. Cute as a button too, aged well.
