As a means of introduction, I am a 63 year young white male who has voted democrat with only one exception. I am fiscally conservative politically and personally. But I believe the federal government should provide a minimum standards social safety net.

Changes I would like to see are:

-A move to a consumption based tax. Eliminating all corporate and personal income and SS taxes.
-Repeal of all "morality" laws regarding conduct of adult citizens, such as in gambling, drugs, and sex.
    -Term limits for politicians.
-Federal funding for races. Hard limits on donations and only by individuals.
-Student loans administered by the federal government. Loan maximum equal to cost of attendance at public university in your state.
-Loan modifications of new loans for military service, and community service in areas of need.
-Charter school expansion in areas of poor student performance in order to qualify for federal educational funds.

I agree with all your points and I consider myself a conservative. Are you sure you're not a libertarian?

I agree with a lot of your changes, though I don't know about student loans. If gubmint's going to handle that, why not just make higher education more like public education?

I'm a conservative leaning independent with a social conscience, so I like most of your ideas. Maybe we'll talk about them in the threads.

    Cheers!

Because right now the banks are making money that they do not have to. The government pretty much guarantees repayment by law, they should just cut out the middleman and collect it by payroll deduction or community/national/ military service for those who wish to relieve themselves of the loan burden.

The libertarian position of not having a social net for the bottom rung turns me off. A government should provide a min standard of living. It certainly does not have to be as it is now, but until they propose something other than the poor's will to survive will see to their own improvement, I can't vote for them.

But I agree with a lot of the people that say government's solutions contribute to the issues.

The war on recreational drug use among adults is an example of that. Making millions of people criminals, Sociopaths millionaires, total destruction of whole neighborhoods and cities, ruining the health of millions. All because of some people want others to live lives as they do.

I look forward to our conversations.
