Palihapitiya’s criticisms were aimed not only at Facebook, but the wider online ecosystem. “The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works,” he said, referring to online interactions driven by “hearts, likes, thumbs-up.” “No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. And it’s not an American problem — this is not about Russians ads. This is a global problem.”

This is quite interesting to me and I have to say I agree 100%. I've been saying this for years these social media things are screwing people up. The need for instant gratification and feedback and acknowledgement has taken over some folks lives and it's both comical and sad.

I was listening to the radio on the way to work the other day and there was a discussion on there about a man whose girlfriend was upset with him because he didn't "like" all of her pictures she posted on facebook. It was such a big deal that it was threatening their relationship. I laughed and shook my head and the program went to commercial break and would have some callers calling in after break to give their 2 cents. I was thinking good, this is so stupid I can't wait to hear some callers call in and defend this guy.

    Wrong....

Every single one of the callers were against the guy both male and female. He was told he was a bad boyfriend, not supportive of his girlfriend, it's 2017 get with the program, you're selfish because you won't take 2 seconds out of your day to like her stuff on facebook, etc. The guy was sitting there saying "We live together...I tell her that her pictures are great in person because we live in the same house and I'm standing there when she takes them..." Nope, that sort of logic wasn't good enough. He was the bad guy because he didn't "like" them on Facebook.

Your significant other does something great? Hug them or kiss them in person and tell them it's great and you are proud of them is no longer valid. You must "like" the picture of what they did on social media or you are not supportive of them lol. This sort of thing isn't just a parody from this radio show it really does work like that nowadays. If you don't log in on social media for awhile folks think you've died. They won't call you because calling people is so last century, they might shoot you a text message, if you don't respond to that then you're dead lol

Generational thing I suppose. I personally find it hilarious and ridiculous at the same time but to each their own I guess.

^^The fact that things like this are floating around the internet and being asked as legitimate questions is proof that something is seriously wrong with people nowadays. And the sheer amount of people who honestly could not do it is shocking and hilariously sad. There are A LOT of people out there who honestly in their hearts could not get rid of their cell phones for a month without having a panic attack because they NEED constant self gratification in the form of social media likes or they will literally get depressed.

That my friends is not good...Facebook did a good thing by connecting people together, but it's a double edged sword big time and it has gotten out of control.

FB is nothing but a cess pit, run by a thief. People who trust this guy need to wake up.

lol I've seen that before. But seriously that's basically what these social media sites are and it's crazy. It's as if Facebook has now taken the role of what makes things official in life.

I was just talking to some younger coworkers of mine and they were talking about one of their buddies new girlfriend and how they went on a date the other day. One of them asked "Are you two Facebook official?". I asked what that meant and they told me it means you two go on your Facebook pages and say that you are dating each other, and until you do that then you aren't officially together lol....

The hell? So prior to Facebook no ones relationships were valid lol?

It's an addiction and a lot of these kids are feigns and they don't even know it. There's a young girl at work who is on her phone literally every second of the entire day. She carries an extra battery charger thing around with her. A few weeks ago she randomly sent me a text message during the weekend. She didn't want anything, she was just saying hi, then the basic meaningless conversation of what are you doing? Oh fun, etc. I asked her what she wanted and she actually explained it to me. She said she was out having lunch and she needed to talk to somebody. Not talk as in needs an ear to listen to an issue but just talk. She said that she literally cannot not be in constant interaction with somebody at all times. She'll go out to lunch by herself or something but she HAS to be talking to somebody at all times. Not in person, but texting.

From the second she wakes up in the morning until she falls asleep she has to be on her phone interacting with people. If nobody responds to her she panics, literally. Shes done it to me before. I'll get a string of text messages saying hey, hello, are you there, what are you doing, wake up, you suck at responding, omg...., etc. Doesn't want anything, she just needs to be talking to somebody and nobody was responding to her.

Something is wrong with that....That ain't normal..

A very sad - but not altogether shocking - story.

I've never joined Facebook. I've never seen a reason to.

I got banned for hate speech on Facebook, simply for posting the FBI statistics page URL on the BLM Chicago fan page.

Yeah Facebook is a cesspool of groupthink. If I remember correctly up until a few months ago Facebook itself catered your ads and videos and stuff based on your political ideology. Basically it read your Facebook postings and gathered a profile of you and catered your "front page" to what it thought your beliefs were. I've read that they have since ceased doing that.

Facebook is good for some things like keeping distant family and friends somewhat close. But it has gotten out of control in my opinion. That's what everybody is doing when you see them on their cell phones non stop while in society. They are constantly updating their Facebooks and reading other peoples stuff and liking it and commenting, etc. That and I guess the Twitter thing.

It's like people can't put these things down. When I was a kid punishment meant locking me in my room. Nowadays if you want to punish a kid take their cell phone away and kick them out of the front door and make them go outside and play. It's sad.

Like that picture in my OP, I'd literally pay money to be able to live out there for a year with no internet or cell phone. In 2017 there are literally millions of people who honestly in their hearts would not live out there for 1 million dollars if it meant they had to give up their Facebooks and Snapchat or whatever.

    That ain't normal....
