Norway with its unique blend of socialism and capitalism is doing something right. Is it possible for the USA to reach Norway's standard of living.

Norway wouldn’t work here. It’s a country with one ethnicity looking out for the common good. They are unified by language, culture, religion, etc.

The U.S. is a huge multicultural nation. Because of that, we have nothing in common with each other. We don’t give a damn about anyone outside of our tribe. Everyone is out to grab as much as they can from the government. As a selfish nation, we would abuse any system that provides “free” medical care, etc.

Expanding the role of government is always a cluster.

A solid community of minority citizens are active in their country's life and politics, so, no, I am not.

One can argue pareto optimality, but the difference is so small that it is insignificant. The issue for Norway is not equality but fairness, at which it is succeeding.

how is fairness not related to equality?

A lack of equal protection of the law is what creates inequality and the perception of unfairness.

How racist of you. The big difference is of course that Norway is 95% Norwegian while the US isn't 70% anything.

Oh and one other thing, The notion that the US is unfettered capitalism is so laughably absurd I'm not sure how to even begin to address so high a level of fantasy.

    oh for ****s sake.

First of all, you are comparing apples to Buicks. Secondly, Norway has an effective tax rate of over 38%. I don't need to pay government such steep dollars to wipe my nose and ass. Maybe you do, I don't.

Addtionally... I don't want their lifestyle. Here are a few facts you are missing.

Average Norway Home Square Footage - 1,600
Average American Home Square Footage - 2,600

Number of Cars per 1,000 People Norway - 616
Number of Cars per 1,000 People USA - 833

    Norway Population - 5.26 Million
    USA Population - 327.2 Million

You want to live in a small commune of people that live in small houses and ride their bike everywhere, with very little racial diversity and suck on the nipple of government go for it. Trying to impost Norwegian values on the US is ridiculously naive.

As of 2012, an official government study shows that 86.2% of the total population are ethnic Norwegians.[11] The national minorities of Norway include Scandinavian Romani, Roma, Jews, and Kvener, as well as a small Finnish community.

Even their "minority cities are white!"

Jesus... that's unbelievable. Over five bucks for a dozen eggs.

Its twice as expensive to live in Norway with less convenience.

Always ignored is that the entire population of Norway is much less than the population of the SF Bay Area. We have tried the Democratic party system here and this week the homeless with autos are moving into a church lot provided by a church. Seems the Democrats government simply does not allow the homeless in autos a place to park. They will ticket the cars or put boots on them to immobilize the autos. Some that have boots on their car say the Democrats prevented them from seeking a job. Enormous tickets penalties are on the cars of the homeless living in them.

Most americans would love to live in a place like norway. But some of us would demand to have bigger houses, more cars, so we "look" better than others, and those people would find norway to be a nightmare for themselves.

Norway is probably healthier psychologically than americans, and our unhealthy would hate what norway is.

What norway has is probably impossible if one values multiculturalism and division. Norway is probably what human intelligence can create, if there is the desire to do it. Norway is an example of human intelligence in operation, and what it looks like when exercised. Our trouble is, there is no fix for our stupidity.

Excellent post. I’ll add we spend over twice the amount on defense as percentage of GDP as Norway. If not for that fact Norway would be full of Russians not white Norwegians. Uff da.

People gravitate to the best deal. If Norway was the best deal, the population would not be 5 million, it would be closer to our 320 million.

All of the denying by the right yet the numbers don't lie.

Norwegians live far better as a group than Americans. Now, those of us in the upper 10% in America live pretty well, but it is those who live at 40 to 60% in America are so afraid of sharing and caring.
