Mitt Romney: President Obama Out Of Touch Like Marie Antoinette

By Jon Ward | HuffPost | 12/29/11 10:58 PM ET

    Excerpts:

MASON CITY, Iowa - “Mitt Romney on Thursday sought to portray President Barack Obama as out of touch with the struggles of everyday Americans - a charge he himself has often faced - by comparing the president to a former French queen who was overthrown during the French Revolution.

"When the president's characterization of our economy was, 'It could be worse,' it reminded me of Marie Antoinette: 'Let them eat cake,'" Romney said, referring to the infamously dismissive remark toward the poor attributed to the queen.

"This is not a time to be talking about, 'It could be worse.' It's a time to recognize that things should be better," Romney said during an interview on his campaign bus with The Huffington Post. "And the president's policies have failed the American people, have led to 25 million people still being out of work. He didn't cause the recession, but he has made it deeper and has made the recovery more tepid and the pain last longer."

Obama said during a Wisconsin town hall meeting in June 2010 that "it's hard to argue sometimes, things would have been a lot worse" without the stimulus plan he pushed through Congress. He also said that while unemployment was high, it was not as high as it could have been if he had done nothing.

As for his chances in Iowa, where he is increasingly seen as a favorite to win or come in a close second to Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), Romney acknowledged that he is "all in" in the Hawkeye State. But he downplayed a comment he made earlier in the day, when a reporter asked if it would be a victory if he finished behind Paul and Romney answered flatly, "No."

Paul is undoubtedly set to compete with Romney for delegates over many months, having organized and prepared, just as Romney has, in many states beyond the first four. But Romney's comment indicated that in such a contest with Paul, he has no apprehension that he will lose to the Texas iconoclast.

Romney told Real Clear Politics in a separate interview, simply, ‘Ron Paul's not going to be our nominee.’ "

    …..

It takes a lot of political chutzpah for a candidate for the presidency to call the actual president “out of touch, like Marie Antoinette” when we are looking at the prize flip-flopper of the motley crew of republican/T-bagger candidates. In Mitt Romney, one never knows which Romney will appear that day, as he changes his beliefs according to what audience he is speaking to.

Further, Mitt Romney has never been in touch with the middle class himself, being priviledged and wealthy all his life, how can he be expected to have any empathy toward the middle class and the poor? He made billions by buying up companies, renovating them, then firing the employees and selling the companies for a huge profit. So layoffs for Romney would be “business as usual” and of no great concern to him.

The act of scrubbing state equipment clean as he left the governorship of Massachusetts, plus buying all the hard drives to computers, left incoming Deval Patrick with no inkling that there ever was a governor, and his Lt. governor, legal staff, and aides were ever there and what they did on a daily basis. It is the public’s right to know what they did on every work day, as they were paying Romney and his staff their salaries.

Also, Romney has refused to release his tax returns even if he wins the nomination, which makes you wonder how ethical this man truly is, and what he is seeking to hide? Every other candidate has released theirs in both parties as a matter of course, but strict Mormon Mitt Romney apparently thinks it is a private matter and therefore no one’s business. I wonder if the IRS feels that way too…

He was so sleazy in his attack ads on Gingrich until he got rid of him as a contender, but now he has Ron Paul, who is much better organized, has devoted followers and financial donors who will lift him over any of Romney’s properly camouflaged IED’s as the week progresses toward the caucus.
Romney’s slip of the tongue when he stated simply that “Ron Paul is not going to be our nominee” is extremely telling. How does he know Paul won’t be the nominee? Does he have anyone’s promise that it will be himself?

I think that Mitt Romney has spent a good deal of his fortune, plus accepted donations with promise of future help from corporations to get this far, and if he gets the nomination we will know for sure that is what happened because
average people just don’t like Mitt Romney. There is something lacking in him that people sense right away, which is why he lost in 2008. He truly is an empty suit.

Romney, when told of the unemployment of the workers? Of cutting off student loans? He offers a simple solution:

Or sell the stock your daddy gave you! And if renting is tough? Why, just borrow the cash from Daddy! No credit checks there!!

Man, why didn't I think of that! Romney is sooo smart!
