Anyone who believes a liar is a fool. And he who doesn't accept the word of an honest man, is a moron. (I'm joking)

On a serious note, you have take the lie itself into account. It's one thing for a person to lie to get out of a difficult situation, or to make someone feel good, and another thing to lie to malign and demonize others. There is also lying for greedy and self serving purposes.

I take everything a person says at face value at first, and then determine what they say in relation to what they are doing before forming an opinion of them. I have found that most times, the opinion people give of others, is a reflection of themselves.

Can you tell which military efforts were legitimate and which were mistakes or unjustified?

How much defense (or perhaps "defense") is necessary?

That's all fine on a personal level, but you suggested nations should operate that way. History teaches us that that is not a good idea.

I don't think we would be better off if we hadn't been involved in some places. Vietnam was a lost cause, but helping defend Europe from the Soviet Union was the right thing to do. The world would not have been better off if we had left it to Hitler or the Soviet Union.
It's not a binary choice. Peace is not something we can have just because we want it.

The folly of such thinking was demonstrated in the 1930s by the government of France. If they had acted when Hitler moved into the Rhineland in 1936, WW2 might have been avoided.

It definately would have been avoided. France had the best army in the world at that time, if only they would have known where, when, and how to use it.

I think WW1 should have been instructive to France. Germany came very close twice to winning the war and was a potential military power again in the 1930s. A rearmed Germany would be an existential threat.

Russia never attacked the west in its history. Every time we had to fight with the western power - we were defending ourselves or

It means that you will need to invest your money into their military in order to make them believe that in case of Russian aggression they have a chance to survive. It is costly for you and scaring for them.

Usually the pronoun is used for the last noun in the previous sentence. In our case it is 'corrupt political class'.

No. These countries have been changing the big state to protect them throughout their history. Yesterday it was the USSR, the day before yesterday it could have been Germany or Austro-Hungary (no longer existing). What will it be tomorrow? Maybe they will grow up to big boys themselves. Maybe not. But I am sure that no country will be able to control them forever. Which means that the US leadership will fade out. 100%. :)

China is Russian partner. We start to have strategic partnership which might develop much closer comparing to what we have ever had between the EU and the US. China buys everything it wants and sells everything it wants. It is not a problem. The EU while being under NATO has to restrict trade with Russia to its loss (and to a loss of Russia as well). We will see if they change their mind in a decade or so. For now it is NATO which really threats the safety of Russia and for another century the people who were blessing US and its ideology in the 90s will view their policy as a threat. It's a fact.

Russia doesn't need to attack any of the eastern countries. We don't have anything of value there. No resources, no technology, no vital interests. These countries are pawns in hands of the US who at the moment tries to use them for war. We will try our best to not to let the war to break out.

NATO or not NATO doesn't really matter. What really matters is the level of hostility. If any eastern European country starts to threaten the vital interests of Russia no NATO will save it. And it will only matter if only this country suffers or the whole world. Doesn't make any difference for eastern European countries, eh? :)

Really?! If you feel threatened it would mean that your opinion is valued?

Nixon had quite a sophisticated diplomacy at the right timing with China. But those days have gone. The situation changed. China is no longer a poor and rural state.

Yes, I agree. Cryptocurrencies are the real threat to the dollar. It will be interesting to see if they survive and prosper or fail under a concerted US attack.

Either way the US dollar's days are numbered, and with that the hegemony of the US. Once foreign inflows of dollars dry up, the Pentagon system will have to radically contract and reorganise on a far smaller scale. My guess is that we will begin seeing this happening in the not too distant future as OBOR becomes increasingly more significant.

The US saw this happening and it was only recently that they exerted considerable pressure on the UK to not join the Chinese Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The UK ignored American pressure and joined. So did Australia and many leading EU nations. To add insult to injury, the UK then announced that the City of London would become a principal clearing house for the Chinese Yuan. Meanwhile, the AIIB intends to effect loans in a basket of currencies (including the dollar, yuan and the EU) to denominate loans and settlements for projects, thus reducing reliance on the US dollar as well as further internationalising the yuan.

Well, when the United States is pursuing its “interests” it’s rarely pursuing mine. And I’m sorely dissatisfied that my tax dollars are being spent on forces occupying 140 countries. I’m fine with a military that can repell any attack on our shores.

What the US military is unable to defend against, the attack it cannot repel, is the attack from dual citizens working "on the inside". The domestic enemies are the ones we cannot defend against. Indeed, they are triumphant.

Well, that may be, may require a different kind of strategy, but not really related to my point that we ought to have a truly defensive military force that could snap any attack on our shores.

Like somebody was pointing out yesterday, you throw that line out about every three posts. It’s not going to happen.

You moved into Eastern Europe and imposed pro-Soviet regimes. When the peoples in those countries tried to get away, you sent in your tanks.
They wanted our protection and we gave it to them. What's it to you?
It they want out of NATO, they can leave. It's not like when they were in the Soviet bloc.
I see. China has flexible borders everywhere but Siberia. You folks are rather naïve.
Good to hear Russia won't go after more territory ... their last territorial demands were in Georgia and the Ukraine.

    Russia invaded Donbas and Crimea.

Ukraine deserves a strong deterent to prevent further invasion.

if we don't, Poland or Latvia or Finland could be next.

As long as the West doesn’t interfere in those countries it’s unlikely that Russia will.

    so "interference" justifies invasion?

interesting logic. Stalin probably used it when he decided to make a deal with the Nazis to invade and divide up Poland.

Stalin's pact with the Nazis was shameful.

    Hardly!

Ukraine is part of Russia longer than the Republics of Texas or California have bee part of the USA
Unlike Texas & California, never in history was there a Ukrainian Nation.
Ukraine is a region. Not a true nation/state.
As a Republic of the USSR it was hardly more than a state or province within the USSR.
And administrative area, but not a nation/state.

I do so very much look forward to Russian involvement near :flagus:
to end this nonsense and loss of homes, economy and lives.

Okay so a group got away with labeling some mafia an independent country.
    Just like the 'stans.
Now to lend weapons to such nation/state creations is just plain - stupid.
It will come back to haunt :flagus: like Muslim radicals with American equipment in Iraq.

    ukraine-language-map.png

America is the puppet master of the Yellow area only.
    More Roman Catholic. Polish influenced.
I do believe these areas were the result of USSR hegemony after WW2. Ukraine got expanded westward to include land but a less Russian population
