An assault rifle would gave to be defined by the first assault rifle ever produced , the German Sturmgewerh. Fast rate of fire and have automatic fire capability. This does not meet that criteria.

The words "Tactical " in front of rifle is a marketing ploy to get guilible people to buy it. Theyvalso sell "tactucal" knifes, so BFD. I gave seen gloves, boots, and hats described as "tactical". You can put the name tactical on toilet paper and you can get chicken Hawks to buy it.

Why do we care whether a particular weapon is a "battle rifle" or an "assault rifle"?

I do not care. The argument rages between the radical ends of the staunchly anti gun and staunchly pro gun groups. The anti gun gun tend to not understand guns too well nor care to speak about guns in technical terms because the vast majority of them do not own or shoot guns. The anti gun people range from those who want to ban all guns everywhere to those who just want to restrict use, type, function, and who can own them. The pro guns people range from those who believe that we should be able to own any form of weapon from a revolver to a nuclear bomb.

The pro gun activists like to define and talk about guns in a very technical way regarding, type, function, caliber, rate of fire, magazine capacity, clip versus magazine and on and on. The anti gun people tend to refer to guns in general terms. They will call a gun an assault rifle because it may look like one, have the same caliber of real assault rifles. The pro gun people use any description or identification of a gun by the anti gun people that us not 100%technically correct as a cudgel to assault (he he) the opinion of the gun restrictors or gun banners. The radical pro gun people think that everyone including the government wants to ban all guns and confiscate all guns.

The truth is that there are anti gun people who want to ban all guns, they are a minority. There are those who not only want to ban all new purchases of guns and want to confiscate all guns but they are a minority a very extremely small minority.

The radical extreme pro gun people do not believe that there are reasonable people who want reasonable restrictions on guns. they believe that even the smallest restriction or gun control is the slippery slope to gun confiscation.

To the contrary - it was exactly intended for that purpose. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants..."

That's called marketing. You won't find a Mini 14 in any military arsenal, nor will you find an AR-15 for that matter.

All this talk of M14's, AR15's and Mini 14's makes me yearn for some range time. Since I have each one of those plus I'll throw in my m1 carbine and go punch holes in some paper this weekend.

Your pseudo quote about blood of patriots and tyrants needing to be spilled is completely absurd if you think that means bloodshed as a norm. Bloodshed in defense of liberty should be a last resort. Show me where in the Constitution it says that the 2nd was put there so people should fight the government and overthrow it!!

Why in Pete's name do you keep on posting in a thread about guns when you know so little about them?

Why don't *you* take a tube full of .223 bullets, close one end, and then whack the other end real hard with a hammer?

Just see what happens when each of those pointed bullets hits the primer of the bullet ahead of it!

    From Fed Paper 29:

""But though the scheme of disciplining the whole nation must be abandoned as mischievous or impracticable; yet it is a matter of the utmost importance that a well-digested plan should, as soon as possible, be adopted for the proper establishment of the militia. The attention of the government ought particularly to be directed to the formation of a select corps of moderate extent, upon such principles as will really fit them for service in case of need. By thus circumscribing the plan, it will be possible to have an excellent body of well-trained militia, ready to take the field whenever the defense of the State shall require it. This will not only lessen the call for military establishments, but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens. This appears to me the only substitute that can be devised for a standing army, and the best possible security against it, if it should exist."

No mention of overthrow but there *is* mention of standing ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow citizens. Perhaps "replacement of the current government" would be a better description than "overthrow of the current government".

That is *NOT* the link I gave!

BTW, what is the difference between these?

What makes one an assault rifle and the other one *not* an assault rifle? The stock? The color?

Really? You are on here making all kinds of comments about what is and what isn't a military rifle, what is and what isn't an assault rifle, and what is and what isn't a battle rifle and you don't know the difference?

An assault rifle is one using a smaller cartridge (less weight, more ammo) capable of rapid fire useful in suppressing enemy fire while "assaulting" an enemy position.

A battle rifle is one using a larger, more deadly cartridge meant to be used in an aimed manner to kill the enemy.

    This is a battle rifle:

"The accuracy the No4 was expected to achieve was hitting a 6×4 inch plate at 100 yards. But when we talk about accuracy I feel that I must remind readers of what Maj E.B.B Reynolds wrote in his book “The Lee Enfield Rifle”. Maj Reynolds summarised this whole subject up perfectly when he wrote “throughout its many years of useful service the Lee Enfield has had many critics, particularly regarding is accuracy as a target shooting weapon. Many writers and critics appear to have overlooked the fact that it was designed as the British soldier’s personal arm, not as a target rife” Pg 9, Second impression 1962. And this was no target rifle, nor was it ever intended to be, it was deadly efficient in its intended role and proved an extremely solid and dependable battle rifle."

    This is an assault rifle:

"The origins of the M16 rifle lay in the research, conducted soon after the Korean war by Operations Research Office (ORO), founded at Hopking University and sponsored by US Army. Among the reports, produced by the ORO, two are most significant in this respect, the so called Hall and Hitchmann reports. One report stressed the fact that most hits, achieved by soldiers in battle, were made at relatively short ranges (within 300 meters) and, mostly, at random. This significantly undermined the obsession for long-range aimed fire, promoted by the Army. Second report suggested, that the most effective way to increase the probability of hits in the battle is to fire multiple small caliber, high velocity projectiles with controlled dispersion instead of one, relatively heavy and large projectile as used in conventional rifles at the time."

"At the present time almost all of the initial flaws of the M16 have been removed and it is considered among the best assault rifles in the world. While its reliability in harsh conditions cannot match that of its main rival, the Kalashnikov AK-47 and AK-74, it is still a quite reliable weapon, especially when well maintained. It is also comfortable to fire and quite accurate."

Each of the rifles have a different purpose. *THAT* is why we care whether a firearm is one or the other!

This is *so* typical of leftist coastal elites propounding from their Priest-King pedestals about what all of us unwashed masses need! Single shot rifles to kill feral hogs. Small six-shot revolvers to defend our families and homes. Or, better yet, nothing at all! Just roll over and die when a physically stronger person wants to kill you - the Law of the Jungle!
