The problem is not the amount of money the Germans spend, or even what they spend it on. It's the mentality of the German people. They have become, effectively, pacifists. Now ... probably everyone else in Europe is not entirely unhappy with this. Better a BMW parked in front of your house than a King Tiger. But those aren't the only options. (And indeed, someday, we can look forward to the whole world holding this 'all war is awful' view. Our descendants will look back on the immense wealth spent on building machines to destroy our immense wealth and think, 'They must have been mad'. But 'Someday' is generations away., unless we destroy ourselves before then.) But we're not there yet, and Europe, soft and fat and dripping with wealth, had better be able to defend itself. Uncle Sam is going to go home some day. I'm not one of those who thinks Putin is slavering to drive his armored divisions to the Channel ... but better a militarily-strong Europe than a weak one.
