There are two quite separate issues involved here. The first, and most obvious, being that 'Obamacare' bears no relationship to Universal Health Care, and even less to the NHS. So any practices of the NHS, or other UHC systems around the world, are irrelevant to the desirability, or otherwise, of 'Obamacare', or more correctly, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patient_Protection_and_Affordable_Care_Act

This act, while incorporating the salutary provision of enforcing insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions, is basically corporate welfare for the health insurance industry. It cannot be compared in any way to the NHS or any other genuine UHC system. Neither in principle nor in practice.

Sarah Palin was being either totally ignorant or deliberately misleading if and when she stated that 'government health care' (too ambiguous a term to be debated seriously) would inevitably lead to 'death panels'. No such 'death panels' exist anywhere in the world.

The second issue is the veracity of the Daily Mail article. When read carefully, even that alarmist article states that Professor Pullicino identified a single instance where an error of judgment appeared to have been made. He did not quote the fanciful figure of 130,000 patients being 'euthanased' every year - that was a bit of unsubstantiated extrapolation by the reporter.

    L. Robson of Glasgow wrote this in response to the Mail Online article -
So one man's personal experience and opinion is countered by another. Who is to say which is the more valid?

See I believe the problem lies in the fact that you don't see any similarities here. I do believe she already knew that, and I do believe she know why she posted it...you obviously don't and that's pretty scary.

I have a lot of respect for Smartmouthwoman, so I am sure she will illuminate the situation, but at the moment, I cannot see any logical connection with the NHS and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The similarities evade me. One is a government administered health care service funded by taxation, while the other is a system which penalises people if they do not take out private health care insurance to cover a totally private health care system.

To imply that the advantages and deficiencies of one will be evident in another, totally dissimilar, system, does not make logical sense to me.

    Look.

    Communist.

    Obamacare = death panels.

Just LOOK at the Mail article she posted.

    It tells you there.

Communist doctors want to murder BRITS.

To make room in the beds.

    See?

The OP link is the evidence. The statement that "the NHS has admitted killing off 130,000 elderly patients every year" is not supported by the information in the actual article.

As I said, if you want an intelligent debate about something (and there is an important debate to be had here - the LCP and it's controversy isn't a new subject to some of us), a Daily Mail article is not the best starting point.

Been hearing some internet rumors that patients young and old are being snuffed out? Infants, children and adults. Any truth or investigations into any of this?

What are the stats on the rate of death of sick elderly patients in our system versuse the rate of death of sick elderly patients in the UK system? If you can give me that data, as opposed to an anecdotal story from a tabloid newspaper, you might have a point SMW.

The NHS are not killing off 130,000 elderly patients each year.

They never were, and they never will.

The problem with your claim is that you are talking about England not the US and we do not have the same sort of healthcare systems, you are comparing apples and oranges, meaning your thread FAILED.

Plus the actual story is from the DM, and not worth lining your cat litter tray with.

This is a real stupid thread... and its basic BS

The hospital industry is the MOST data rich industry in the US.. They track everything including senior deaths .. Depending on the market demographics you have aged, chronically ill people and some locations have MORE of that than others.

Sara Palin.. who seems to have coined the term "death panels".. is an idiot..

She apparently never heard of peer review, highest and best practice, case mgmt or discharge planning.
