My deepest condolences to the surviving family members, surviving students and faculty, the surrounding community and the shooters family members as well.

After have that, I find it very telling that nobody in this thread thus far even comes close to discussing the real reason behind this massacre. Just for the anti-gun community, I'll state the real reasons why this happened in full plain view, so that when (not if) it happens again anywhere in the world, you will know why and not have the typical knee jerk reaction to imply that banning guns is the solution. Here is the formula that repeatedly causes these kinds of things to happen and will cause them to happen in the future. The mathematics is very simple:

Piss + Poor + Parenting = Pathological People

Piss Poor Parenting Producing Pathological People. It is that simple. That cut and dry. Prevent Piss Poor People form Producing Pathological People and you eliminate 99% of all ill behavior in society. Not rocket science. Not heavy three dimensional mathematics. Just a cold hard reality check to the gut, yet again. This time in Crimea. Nex time? Who the hell knows. But, what we do know is that the Number #1 Causation will be:

Piss + Poor + Parenting = Pathological People

It does not matter the crime committed. It does not matter the atrocity endured, how horrible, how nasty, how pathetic, how wretched, how disturbing, how much unmitigated gall it took, how felonious, how hateful, how vengeful or how incredibly pointless. The formula above will remain extant as to Causation.

How much can be attributed to poor parenting, and how much can be attributed to sociopathy on the part of the murderer? Such is not a learned skill, such is a physical defect.

Is there an actual argument being made? Some people die in plane crashes. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't have laws to prevent car accidents.

 

If the Columbine killers had relied solely on their homemade bombs (which failed to detonate) then no one would have been killed. Guns are more reliable instruments of murder.

 

Because such plays absolutely no part in these incidents occurring.

 

Such cannot be said with any degree of certainty, especially as they carried knives with them during the massacre.

 

In a free society we shouldn't have laws that infringe upon the fundamental rights of the citizen who has committed no crime. That is the core flaw of most gun control laws: they punish everyone for the actions of an extreme minority.

Did the individual in question decide that they were going to commit these murders, purely because firearms were legal for ownership in the country? Is it going to be argued that the decision to commit nineteen counts of murder would have been refrained from, if firearms simply had not been legal in the country?
