I am sick of liberals acting as if they own the lack of belief in a deity and have a monopoly on rationality (HA!). This thread is a reminder that there are, and have been, plenty of men and women who lack theistic beliefs AND who do not suffer from the mind rot known as liberalism. Barry Goldwater [U.S. Senator] Christopher Hitchens [journalist] (became nonliberal in later years) Penn Jillette [magician, entertainer] Ayn Rand [philosopher] Teller [magician, entertainer] Edward Teller [nuclear physicist] James Watson (became nonliberal in later years) These names are just the tip of the iceberg.
Um.... nope. Liberals tend to acknowledge the intellectuals on the right, there just are not very many of those intellectuals who are conservative.
Which makes for interesting conversations between me, my brother, and his uber Catholic uber Republican boyfriend. BUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
My wife has a gay cousin thats conservative, and we love her to death. She's hilarious. Anyway you didn't answer the question. Do you consider yourself to be an intellectual?
I like to be intellectually minded, I do not however believe I know enough detail in enough subjects to be considered a bonified intellectual.
Reminds me of when the Apostle Paul (the most learned of the early apostles, being trained as a Pharisee as well as being a Roman citizen) went to the Greek Agora where all the intelligentsia of his time hung out in philosophical discussions, and was basically 'laughed out' after reasoning with them about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Doesnt sound much different than today, except those intelligent Greeks were 'pagan worshippers,' and today's self-proclaimed, pseudo-intellectuals are 'self-worshippers'...
It is a quirk of history and education. Social issues bring theists on board with the conservatives, turning off the nontheists. Science is an interesting subject. Economics is not so interesting. So the typical nontheist only learns enough to bash religion, but not hairbrained liberal ideas.
Conservative atheists exist, and they are the least generous towards charities of any group. I don't like them.
Exactly. Too many liberal progressive nontheists put a great deal of faith in the power of the state to solve problems. As a libertarian nontheist (and not a former theist at all), I find it dismaying to see the worship at the altar of the state that goes on by my fellow non-theists.
So your brother is gay, and has a boyfriend who is "uber Catholic" but living in a gay relationship despite the Catholic Church considering homosexuality a sin? Yeah right. And if so, then not very "uber Catholic" then is he?
Right? My brother has a worse track record with guys than I do gals. I find it amusing. It is difficult to top me in that regard. LOL
Gotta luv this argument... like a contest to see which party has the most heathens. In this competition, Democrats win, hands down.
I half think the story is baloney - he calls himself a devout Catholic but he's openly living in mortal sin? So how does he rationalize that... what, does he does he think he can just go confess it to a priest on his deathbead and make it all okay with God? How does he able to go to mass with the whole congregation knowing he's living in mortal sin?
I think what I find most troubling is this bizarre belief on the part of atheists regardless of their political leanings that only atheists can be intellectuals.
Well I'd say yes and no. Though generally I don't see a link between atheism and ones political and/or econimic views, I can't see any rational way an atheist could be what is referred to as a "social conservative". Can any atheists here imagine voting for a Santorum? I can't. Someone correct if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that social convervatism, as seen in american politics, is antithetical to atheism.
What I find bizarre are sweeping generalizations by people complaining about sweeping generalizations. Especially when the sweeping generalizations they are complaining about are actually formed by their own inability to understand a very accurate and well documented fact about intelligence and religion.
