Novak Djokovic to remain in visa limbo until Monday as he fights deportation from Australia

And now he's negative. Should have satisfied the sanctimonious BSers in Australia....

 

Visas are issued, based upon the information provided on the application. However, the visa only entitles you to enter the country and present yourself to our border force, where additional questions may be asked. Djokovic was apparently unable to satisfactorily answer those questions, as his answers were at odds with his original application.

 

My understanding is that he was unable to produce evidence of that earlier infection, or his immune status. One would think that a multi-millionaire, with an entourage of skilful lawyers following him around, that all of his documentation would be scrupulously in order….particularly given the ‘yes I am, no I’m not’ games he has been playing with both tennis and government officials for months, regarding his vaccination status…

 

And there’s nothing ‘sanctimonious’ about it…….EVERY other visitor to Australia is required to follow the same rules. Unlike some other countries, we don’t make exceptions for millionaires who just happen to be very good at chasing furry balls with a fly swat….

What utter BS. I would think that the country of Australia wouldn't want to globally humiliate themselves this way either, but who knows these days. Petty little tyrants are turning up everywhere around the world these days.

If Australia issue the visa which was required to travel on, perhaps they might have also included the requirement to produce these artifacts on entry. There seems to be quite a lot of dispute over that and looks like the gov of Australia are trying really hard to make it look like they are the aggrieved party here. Like I posted earlier, Australia should be stripped of any future international sporting event based on this. Why should anyone want to have to go there for work, (in this case sporting) but the point isn't different. If Australia are going to try to extort you into staying for an additional two weeks, plus testing, etc, why go at all? I suppose the US should immediately reciprocate in kind, and deport all australians in this country regardless in protest.

 

We Aussies have an attitude where we LIKE seeing “tall poppies” being cut down so mostly we are viewing this with amusement - I posted a whole bunch of memes in the political memes thread about it.

And you are incorrect about our procedures involving those who visit our country. The English Cricket Team is currently touring Australia for a series of matches against our national team. They were required to undergo a period of quarantine prior to that tour commencing and are required to observe the usual protocols when attending games and practice sessions, as are the Australian players.

Djokovic is expected to follow similar requirements. He’s played “no answer” for months and it has caught up with him, so now he’s trying to use his wealth and celebrity to bulldoze his way through…

I'd say if you're really willing to say equal application of the law, then, explain why he was issued the visa to begin with. He had to have a visa to leave Dubai. And that is really the issue where "no one above the law" evaporates in this discussion. Clearly, the exception exists, was used, and then rescinded. Someone else mentioned that his potential income from the tournament could have been several million US. He should sue. For lost wages. As the returning champ from last year, and his current string of wins, he would likely have made a lot of money there.

Blame the NYTs then. ESPN have all said the same thing. For the Visa to have been issued, he had to pass two medical review boards. That was the only way Novak could have exited Dubai to Australia. Sounds like some folks didn't mind the extortion. Two weeks of isolation seems a bit extreme. But I'm sure the US could reciprocate. Or the world for that matter. I fail to understand what you're referring to about "no answer". He tested positive for COVID in 2020. The question then does his natural immunity from fending off that bout give him sufficient antibodies today. From all the medical evidence, it does. And yet some loathsome bureaucrat in Melbourne is misguided. Sorry, that seems less than professional. More it looks targeted to ensure that Novak couldn't repeat.
