I have to hand it to our founding fathers. They seem to have more brains than many today have. They saw the problem of the popular vote and fixed it. They also knew enough to make America a Republic and not a Democracy.

    Wow!

I had NEVER seen that before!

On second thought, come to think of it, you posted the exact same thing in the First 2 Posts of this thread.

Is there an Echo in here?:bored:

The GOP would never vote to get rid of the EC.

It would be impossible for them to win another POTUS Election without it.

Doesn't sound libertarian to me, but, then, I wouldn't expect an authoritarian to understand liberty. Everything is about accruing benefits to yourself and shoving your morals down the throats of others.

Look even with the most populated Blue states, California, Oregon, Washington, just a couple of heavily populated counties, turn those whole states Blue. Most of the people out of those few counties all voted Red, but the state went blue Most of the people all over the country voted Red. Yet because a few heavily populated counties, the states goes Blue. But as we can see, most of the country went Trump.

Some times you need to repeat things for some people so thick headed they don't get it the first, second or even third time.

Poll: Voters prefer popular vote over Electoral College

    https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/27/poll-popular-vote-electoral-college-1238346

"More voters prefer to elect the president by national, popular vote over the existing Electoral College system, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.

Half of voters, 50 percent, say the national popular vote should be used for presidential elections, the poll shows — more than the 34 percent who think presidential elections should be based on the Electoral College. Sixteen percent of voters have no opinion."

Is there any issue favored by Repubs that is held by a majority of Americans? Not that I blame them on this one. There may never be another Repub prez is the majority of people get to decide.

Wow, what a concept, a government that the majority of people want. I can see why Republicans don't like popular elections, why they try so hard to restrict voting rights. The majority of people living in the United States do not like Republicans or Republican ideas. In open and fair elections, Democrats always win.

Statistics bare it out. In states like Oregon, Washington, and Minnesota, who all have much higher voter participation than the rest of the country, Democrats and liberal ideas dominate. In states, like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and most of the south, where the vote is highly suppressed, Republicans rule. The corruption of Republican politics can be seen in that the people tend to thrive better, economically, educationally, technologically, culturally, and have better health where Republicans are few and have no real power.

which means you are ok being governed by a person the American people (the ones being governed) specifically rejected.

yes, it has never been in question that he received more wide open, unpopulated empty space than Clinton did. Actual voters........chose Clinton.
no, this is a strawman. EVERYONE's vote should count equally. Removing the EC would accomplish this. With the EC in place, smaller unpopulated states voters votes carry more weight than larger populated states voters.

if attempted today? they wouldn't. Once a republican wins the popular vote, and loses the election, that will change.

So, like New Hampshire? Or Vermont. Or Montana?

I'd love to see your list of the 38 states you think would ratify your amendment.

When you ask a question, and I answer it, then you ask it again, you are going to be reminded I've already answered it. It's a silly and pathetic game you like to play, which fools no one.

They made it a Republic because the only alternative was to make it a Monarchy. And they had lived under one their whole lives. And they didn't want one. Washington could have just as easily become King as President. That was the big debate. There was very little debate about Democracy, because the only concept of it was related to direct democracies like the ones in ancient Greece and such which were already outdated at the time . The modern concept of Democracy was born after our nation was founded. As a matter of fact, it was created precisely by our country's revolution (along with other revolutions, such as the French revolution) as an alternative to dictatorship. This is why we are a Democratic Republic. We don't have a direct vote for other reasons. But it has become obvious that it is a better alternative to the electoral college. At a minimum, it should be put to a vote if we want to keep the electoral college. I am convinced direct vote would win on a landslide. Because there are literally zero arguments for the electoral college. And this is not a "liberal" thing. This is bi-partisan.

I think Europe has implemented democracy much better in the parliamentary system than we have. They don't have our toxic partisanship, and their populations are more politically involved because their votes matter much more.

The first reason that the founders created the Electoral College is hard to understand today. The founding fathers were afraid of direct election to the Presidency. They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power. Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers:

It was equally desirable, that the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice. A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations. It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States. But the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the system under consideration, promise an effectual security against this mischief.

I completely agree that a parliamentary system works much better. Besides what you point out, it also does away with absolute bi-partisanship. But, in reality, it's impossible to implement it here at this stage. Precisely because of our bi-partisanship.

Exactly. The main reason for an Electoral College was to avoid a Trump. But, lo and behold, we got Trump.

As a result, there are zero justifications right now to keep an electoral college. Once we have rid ourselves of Trump, the amendment should be on the ballot.
