Powerful eartquakes in Turkey

Two major earthquakes and a number of aftershocks hit Turkey today.

People are going about their business and In the blink of the eye a building collapses.

There's a fault line that runs through Israel which seismologists say is long overdue for the big one.
Curious if this fault line is the same one and/or connected.

There was another 6.0 about an hour ago according to the USGS earthquake map.

Imagine trying to rescue somebody in a collapsed building and the aftershock tops the rubble over you. Holy sheet.

Sadly, Turkey is no stranger to powerful deadly earthquakes.

"Much of Turkey sits on an earthquake-prone belt known as the Anatolia fault.

The worst earthquake in Turkish history killed an estimated 40,000 people in the eastern province of Erzincan in 1939."

Latest on quakes that hit beleaguered region

• A second 7.6-magnitude earthquake has hit southeastern Turkey. It followed a quake registering 7.8 that struck the region earlier on Monday.
• More than 1,300 people are known to have been killed in Turkey and northern Syria. The toll is expected to rise sharply on both sides of the border.
• The early morning 7.8-magnitude temblor was centered about 20 miles from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital in Turkey.
• The first quake was Turkey's largest disaster since 1939, according to President Tayyip Erdogan.

 

This quake came in on a full moon.

Some have suggested that this is cyclic, others suggest it is apocalyptic, most folks don't have any idea.

Thoughts and prayers to the folks of Turkey.

 

The death toll has jumped to 2300 so far. The next 24 hours will be crucial for finding survivors. So many are trapped and by all appearances Turkey and Syria are stretched to the limit on search and rescue resources and services. They are reporting that more than 4200 buildings have been destroyed and a lot of the casualties came from people who were asleep in their homes.
The first quake was around four in the morning. Praying for them.

7.7 is pretty strong. Lots of places took a lot of damage from what I have seen. Besnia photos look pretty bad, wonder how that works out considering the rebel held area depends so much on Turkey and Turkey has their own problems. Death toll at 4,300 according to BBC.

Some historical sites were also hit pretty hard.

 

Israel offered Syria humanitarian aid, they refused.

You know it's Syria, when you see no international help, basically no equipment present and people digging by hand.
It really is shameful those people in a war zone are just let to rot and die, while people in say Ukraine gets THAT much help, and Turkey a lot of help too.



Makes perfect sense them people flee out of that place to the EU.

 

They will get help but its limited.
North Syria under rebel control is under pressure because most of their help has come from Turkey, who is currently overwhelmed with their own situation.
Syria can also only get limited help from Russia, Iran or even China. I thinks UAE also is sending Syrian government aid.

Sanctions on the Syrian government, and terrorist designations in northern Syria make sending help difficult.

 

Erdogan blocks Twitter for 12 hrs.as people try to find/connect with loved ones.
He said that no one will be left homeless.
We'll see about that.

Just tragic, I shudder to think what would happen if we lost that many people in an earthquake:

Over 21,000 dead. Stupid BS like terrorist designations, etc should be ignored. Everything possible should be done to help these people. The term terrorist is thrown around so much anyway that it is meaningless, and has basically become “any non government fighter who opposes us”.
The only thing that matters is helping those in need. Politics should go out the window.
