I don't know if this is prepping but I have been collecting and re-claiming wood. Mostly pallets and shipping crates. I like using it and it is free. I am storing it up for a hardwood floor, poplar benches , and other stuff. I really want a butcher block work bench. I have all kinds of wood from 100 year old heart pine to green poplar.

Yep, timber is ALWAYS worth stockpiling. Keep it away from the house if you're in a termite area, and be aware that pallets are often treated.

We have termites, dry rot, fire ants , etc. Borax mixed with bleech keeps the termites and stuff away as long as it is kept dry. My stuff is all HT. I have a pallet gold mine and the tractor dealer has good shipping lumber 1x6, 2x6, 2x4, etc. Plus landscape timbers. I am also going to build some goat housing with some of it.

 

Excellent. We almost always have enough salvaged timber (from demolition of old houses) to build a modest house. We've previously built a tiny house using same, and several sheds. It's a nice feeling to know you have enough to create your own shelter

 

Something else, but its a stand-by system, so it kicks in automatically as soon as the power goes out + natural gas from a line so it has unlimited fuel.

GENERAC works well (we have one) but I realized that if electricity fails, so can natural gas. So we've gone solar... totally independent. We're preppers too... food... water PURIFICATION, meds, hygiene items, ammo, barter items, tools, seeds, a library, etc. When I retired in CA we moved to a place we would have tried to escape to in case of emergency.

 

Just bought a nice quality 3 man tent. A good quality tent should have shock corded aluminum poles, most of the uppers should be mosquito net, it should have a rain fly that covers the entire tent but still leaves ventilation.

Ideally it should have a door on each side, so if you're sleeping with someone else she don't have to crawl over them to get out at night. Plan to spend at least $100 on a decent quality tent. With tents you do get what you pay for, the Walmart crap is Walmart crap.

I also made sure to get mine in olive drab green which can be a challenge to find a lot of tents are stupid bright neon colors.

If you want a tent big enough for two people comfortably get a three person tent.

That's a pretty good system to have.

The neighbor in the house behind me has one with multiple propane tanks. I figure after the apocalypse, I'll I'll put on my Mad Max face paint and loot his place first.

 

I have been seriously thinking about wood heat. Nothing is finer on a cold day than to back up to a heater. Since I take apart pallets I get a lot of split wood. Good dry oak and other stuff.

 

It’s more important now than ever. A good food storage during a time of wars and supply chain issues I would say a good storage is essential

 

people tend to get lost in the details of prepping, just remember your three basic needs come first and foremost.... Water food and shelter

 

And I'll add to that this.... You really don't have a single clue as to the basic nature of Americans... We will share and help our neighbors in a time of need as much as anyone else does but if you come at us with the smarmy attitude that you do?.... Yeah, then you're on your own.

I guess that's the thing you only understand if you're an American. It helps if you don't have your nose stuck up in the air to understand it.

Good advice, Fats. We have a dark green 'six man' (technically only a four man), two x three mans, and one ultra light weight two man. Probably seems excessive, but we like to have options! Also don't forget to keep a Trangia (the largest you afford, since they're so lightweight), and a full bottle of fuel - ready to go. We have this one:

 

First, I'm not American.

Second, you're the one who said you don't care what happens to others.

Third, you highlighted the willingness of others to show strangers the same concern you won't show for those you love.

Fourth, you're the one who keeps saying you have no obligation to share. That individualism is your preferred way. That 'every man for himself' is your attitude - evidenced by your comment that your kith and kin can 'take care of themselves'.
