If it was a TEOTWAWKI scenario, the river is the last place I would go. Point taken though...

Well what do you wish to dicuss about prepping?

Several times in my life I've done bicycle touring, the things you need to ride a bicycle 100 miles a day and sleep on the side of the road or the same things you would need to do to prep.

Most people's plans for prepping depend on the availability of gasoline and that's the first thing that goes out the window and the s*** hits the fan.

I'd be happy to discuss it. I can carry a 40 lb load and sleep on the side of the road anywhere I go and be prepared for whatever comes my way.

I was doing this prepping thing before prepping was cool. Me and my buddy used to ride our bicycles 50 mi to camp out and stealth camp and drinking fish all day and all night for all weekend and then turn around and go home and there wasn't a single ounce of gasoline involved in it

Transportation isn't part of my prepping. I retired to a place I'd retreat to if I lived elsewhere in an emergency. I can hunt locally. I can fish locally. Weather isn't an issue, I live where its warm. I started by stocking up on food and water PURIFICATION. Add firearms and ammo. Stockpile medicines, hygiene items and have some extra clothes. Get off the grid with solar energy and maybe have a GENERAC too... just in case. Redundancy is our friend. Have "heirloom seeds" that will produce items with more usable seeds. Make a list of tools you'll need... and get them. Establish a library that covers maintenance of all types, medical procedures, farming and, yes, entertainment. You can find some great stuff online for free like the Special Forces Medical Manual and the Ranger Medical Manual. Get guns and ammo. And barter items like chocolate, booze, tobacco products, and ammo.
Get perimeter defense stuff like lightstick trip flares and have a shovel to dig obstacles. Include military manuals in your library to teach you how.
Get some handheld radios to communicate across whatever sized area you intend to occupy or traverse regularly. Look up the military TEN CLASSES OF SUPPLY as a starting point to get your stuff together. As time goes on you can refine this list with more and more of the basics and add things as you wish like night vision, binoculars, medical/dental instruments, etc. Learn how install aiming stakes, and all the rest it takes to establish a defensive perimeter. If you want a bike... get a bike.

Well my friend, I certainly sounds all good and well but can I ask you a question.,..

What if roving bands of people who come along searching for people just like you, should happen to come along and find you?

Assuming you can send them off, all is certainly well.

But let's say you failed to do that, they realize you're a fighting very hard for a reason because you must have a lot of resources to protect.

What do you plan to do then?

Being ultra light and nomadic, has it's advantages.

I guess what I'm saying is this.....

If you plan to dig in, you had better make sure you can do it for the long haul and repel a repeated series of Invaders who are looking to take what you have.

You may very well beat them today .. or come the next day you'll have to beat another horde of them back.

I mean that's all good and well if you have the weapons in the hardware to sustain it.

But most people I know don't have that ability

A good question. I learned in the Army to have a primary defensive position and fallbacks to secondary and alternate positions. But I was on the design team for dirt and and no longer so nimble. Other solutions are required. I moved here five years, upon retiring. Its a great little town with major medical facilities (a requirement at my age), as well as great restaurants, shopping, and more. Its in a location where folks don't pass through here going somewhere else. This has to be your destination, so I don't expect much in the way of roving bands. But if they do come, this is a town reminiscent of "the good old days". People stick together. And we have a National Guard Battalion on site. If SHTF we won't be defending ourselves alone. We also have lots of veterans here. And its Texas... so most folks have guns.

Well, that's why we chose this location. You don't pass through here coming from any population center on your way to another. And anyone who tries to be hostile here will contribute THEIR weapons and ammo to the general fund.Folks here buy there ammo in lots of a thousand rounds... and reload.

Well I'm glad to hear that, and I live in a very similar town.

I don't have to work tonight but I work all night long at a gas station by myself and I'm not particularly afraid to do it. Don't even carry a andgun, though I do carry a tactical folder.

Sounds like a good thing that we both live in an area where we don't have to be particularly afraid of roving bands.

But if society is we know it should break down, places like that will be primary targets.

I hate to even say it but you and me both know it's true..

Actually? No. We are far off the beaten path for any marauders. And a hi rise condo hotel filled with rich folks is a much better target than we are. They can come here and rip off an old Dodge truck, or go to Houston and get a BMW. They can break into my home and get some grits or they can break into a home in Austin and get fine wines. And the elites in those high rises probably AREN'T armed.

Learn to read, mate, before you try to paraphrase me.
I neither said nor hinted at any of the above. Nor have I at any time done so. They are the antithesis to what I have always believed and lived.
    Your misrepresentation is noted.

In my 20s, I did some bike touring with a tent. But when I get into my 30s, I started bike touring lite, staying at hotels and motels and B&B. Maine has a bunch of nice B&Bs, they're my preference. I also backpacked until my knees gave up the ghost, I was about 50.

Granted, camping gives you some experience with roughing it. But it doesn't have much to do with prepping.

We had a wave of preppers in the 70s. They thought civilisation was going to collapse, and soon. When it didn't happen, they came back.

I rather expect a repeat performance, assuming the current preppers are serious. Which is a proposition I find dubious.
