With the exception of the last eight years I’ve worked in cable tv all my life, started as a tech and went into management in technical operations. Granted, cable has more bandwidth which means they can push more content, but never, ever, not even close, have I heard of a TV provider removing a channel that was already part of their lineup. Never.

I think omni knows it much better you think. But I do think that the owners/managers of Newsmax want special treatment for themselves because after all, they are conservative. And that was their business mistake and lost bigtime. It is also why this is not gaining steam among the rank and file among conservatives as a whole. Just a few who are wonting to play victimhood here.

 

Do you know what the FCC’s Must-Carry rule is? I do, I have no idea if it changed over the years and it would be interesting if a content provider like Newsmax can invoke it.

This has nothing to do with them being conservative, it has to do with them being a very low rated channel who wants DirecTV to pay them like they are Fox News.

And lets be honest, DirecTV is a loosing delivery method. DirecTV has 3-4 years at best as a company. Everyone is moving to internet delivered TV (appleTV, HULU, YoutubeTV etc)

Exactly. The rule was put in place because local stations would go out of business if cable companies didn’t carry them. So I’m wondering, from a professional point of view, if channels who provide content on a national basis can invoke it. More than likely it will take one content provider to go to court or petition the FCC to get that done. But then what happens when every Tom, Dick and Harry invokes the rule and there’s no available bandwidth?

 

I briefly scanned your link and it appears to have been written back in the day when it was common for most cable companies to only have 250mhz of available bandwidth (50 to 300mhz) which can hold 35 analog channels, not 36. Back then each analog channel was 6mhz wide in bandwidth. Today with digital they can squeeze up to 12 channels in that 6mhz and the bandwidth goes from 50mhz to at least 850mhz. I don’t know the bandwidth of satellite TV, but it appears to be a lot.
