Indeed he was a serial rapist; slaves have no volition, most especially when their families are held in bondage as Hemings's were. The grotesque irony of Jefferson being a serial rapist is difficult to accept, but it is fact.

This wrapping is a much a better way to demonstrate. I like it. Its non violent, its doesn't really deface or destroy the statue, yet it makes a statement.

Maybe a larger contingent of citizens should wrap the Washington D.C. Capital building to protest the dysfunctional elitist grafters posing as representative of the people.

 

Judging the morality of men from centuries past is a truly pointless exercise. Why, compared to the men of the 15th century, they were probably more 'progressive'. And without Thomas Jefferson, there is no United States. All this does is to deface the country we live in, and for what? To make some pointless statement?

I think it's one thing to judge people's morality - in this century or others - and Jefferson was a DEEPLY flawed man, and that's putting it as kindly as it can be said, and by a good measure.

But I think it's another to start applying purity standards to works of art which are part and parcel of our shared cultural heritage, and deface, remove, destroy or hide them.

I vigorously approve of, and practice, the former; the latter is a repugnant tragedy.

 

'He without sin should cast the first stone' lol. That's one of the few verses I actually remember, and in a non-biblical sense of course(I wasn't indoctrinated.) But I find it's true regardless of religious affiliation. It's blatant hypocrisy of us to judge centuries of the past with moral ethics of today. We can only imagine in the future, we will be judged harshly by our kids and grandkids in the next generation.

Instead of judging, we should build off the good that they did, while ignoring the bad. These 'youths' destroying property, etc have not been told how 'good' it is to live in America, only that they are 'racially' and 'systematically' oppressed.

And the deeper consequences of convincing a significant portion of Americans that they are 'racially' and 'systematically' oppressed, is that none of them will respect that 'racial and systematic' system. We can foresee a future where the US Military will be undermanned, we've seen LEO's disrespected, etc.

People fear this dictatorship to come, I fear sectarian anarchy, which is far closer to our shores.

You make some good points, but no matter the century, people far less intellectually gifted than Jefferson know that what he did was incredibly wrong.

A slave cannot consent; surely he understood this, or should have.

I think it's fine to discuss this, and that it should be discussed, and his behavior considered in a full assessment of the man.

But his statues - and those of Lee and numerous other imperfect men - should be left alone.
