The three levels of casualty are "catastrophic" (instant), "delayed" (death takes about three days) and "latent letahlity" (death ensues in about two weeks"). When planning nuclear fires, these differences are important. Traditionally it takes two people to remove a casualty from the battle area. So if you delay death, it will remove assets (both people and transport) from the battle area. This could be important depending upon what your objectives are.

You forgot the biggest one: one side thinks the other is weaker than they actually are, and thus the former miscalculates and strikes when they shouldn't.

 

Didn't say they were .. you were the one that claimed the entire Soviet Arsenal would not wipe out the US .. reality being that they would not have to bring any out of storage to wipe out the US - the fact that you don't know this is laughable given - 10% would turn the US into a contaminated wasteland - from which recovery would take decades in best case senario - the entire continental US contaminated at around 200 blasts - ... 640 .. 3 times the number required.

I never said anything about the "entire Soviet arsenal". They would never use it ALL in one attack. So stop making stuff up. I never said "6400 wouldn't do it". Back away from the bong, take some deep breaths.
We have many possible defenses by the way. From holdovers from "Star Wars" like "Golden Pebbles" to the recently refunded ABL to CHAMP. You really should kniw something about your subject matter before posting. In the interim, stick to what you know... gay rights and transgender issues.

1) I never said anything about the "entire Russian arsenal.
2) The US never violated the ABM Treaty. It withdrew from it as it was allowed to do after informing the Russians before hand as required.

 

We have only one hope to solve this: somehow nukes must be made obsolete. Once a new weapon is developed...no, once it is used effectively in battle, there has been nothing to stop humanity from using it until it is made obsolete. So let's hope that whatever makes nukes obsolete is a defensive advancement akin to the castle.

It's only the history of every weapon ever developed and used effectively. It's used by everyone until a new weapon, or defensive application, renders it obsolete. Humanity has never gotten together and said, "We aren't using this weapon anymore", with any effect.

 

Air defense weapons are a good example of what you say. First came heat seeking or radar guided missiles. Then came "chaff" to confuse missile radars and heat dissipators to confuse heat seekers. Then came "Stinger RMP" with a Reprogrammable MicroProcessor to defeat the countermeasure and on and on. To that extent and lots of other examples you are correct.

But nukes don't exist by those rules. A megaton on New York will kill folks in Baltimore. There will be no second chance.

 

Actually it isn't simple "nukes" that are the threat. But nuclear warheads combined with ballistic missiles which have been extremely difficult to stop en masse for a long time.
