Since you tried to deny the meaning of slavery, I doubt you do. If you do, you were certainly dishonest about it, just to win a cheap forum point.

He probably assumes, as a literate educated person, that it is assumed by knowledgeable adult people that he is not speaking literally of the institution of slavery (it having been outlawed well over one hundred years ago).

It could be, as to your last point, West was using a simile, although similes are often used in which two essentially unlike things are being compared. And based on the definition of slavery that I provided for you, I hope you see that eliminates the simile from consideration. I would think the use of the term plantation qualifies as a metaphor, however.

 

The definition you provided was the meaning of slavery he was not referencing. Anybody with basic reading skills could have determined that.

I am well aware he wasn't talking about literal slavery. The problem is mentioning it at all. Using the term to describe something decidedly not as bad as slavery cheapens it. If I walk on a few ants by accident I don't call it a holocaust because I am not an idiot.

The term slavery was used both as a metaphor (slaves to Uncle Scam the way real slaves were owned by the Master), and literally (The condition of being subject or addicted to a specified influence...like government cash and goodies, perhaps? Yes. Definitely so).

That's your choice, but when you look at the state of the black family before and after LBJ's "Great Society" I don't think West was off base at all. Slavery, both pre Civil War slavery and post Great Society slavery, has been devastating to the black family. Inner city people have taken the cheese but it has come at a very high price. West just acknowledges what everyone knows.
