The growing divide within the Republican party has finally come to a breaking point. In Alabama, the state I live in. A senate primary runoff has pitted the far right against the Establishment. With Judge Roy Moore receiving personal support from Steve Bannon, and Luther Strange, who was endorsed by the President. This election will indicate whether the establishment can hold its own against the hard right side of the party. So far it does not look good for Them though, with Moore beating Strange in every single poll so far. But anything is still possible. Personally I hate both of these candidates, but I have to hold my nose and vote for Strange, putting people like Roy Moore in power is potentially a very dangerous thing to do. As he has no regard for laws he doesn't agree with personally.

The winner better beat the Democrat in the general election. To lose an Alabama senate seat would be political malpractice at a level we've never seen before.

The race today is a race to the bottom. Never mind Trump, McConnell is deathly worried a complete moron like Roy Moore could actually win.......and he should be worried.

    Strange can beat any Dem.

Moore will have trouble beating any Dem.

Agreed. And if the GOP starts running populist candidates that are fiscally conservative, the Dems will be having some very serious problems in the near term. That's my view, anyway.

Like trump was doomed to lose to hillary?

Sorry, this kind of advice seems to be a losing advice.

Populism now involved jobs, living wage jobs, lost through the scheme of globalism. It involves stopping illegal immigration and importing foreigners who are brought in to take american jobs. This is a winner, this kind of populism. And that is what put trump into office, like it or not. As Caraville once said, it's the economy, stupid.

Well, it did not work well for Democrats. I know a lot more about Moore than Strange. I do not live in Alabama so do not speak well or ill of the republicans running. Moore seems to have it in his grasp. Can Democrats beat him? I dunno, Moore is widely nationally respected.

The liberal media is making a mountain out of a mole hill. They know that whatever happens tonight, its not a seat they'll be winning any time soon. So they try to create some division and strife, but it doesn't help liberals in the end, so its really pretty stupid...

A Moore victory is a victory for Trump! He wins when populism wins, even when, er, the candidate he personally campaigned for gets blown out. Trump will be on the Stump for whoever the good people of Alabama choose!

Good old Red State politics. Fight like hell, shake hands when its over.

Moore is not nationally respected. He's viewed as what's wrong with southern Republicans by most. I just see him as a grandstander with no fiscal responsibility. In 2003, the Alabama court system was in bad shape--they were running out of money to even have trials, and were talking about shutting down courthouses. Roy Moore was head of the Alabama courts (as Chief Justice of the AL Supreme Court). While that was going on, he was foolish enough to tilt at windmills by setting up the Ten Commandments monument (with his own money). He then refused the federal court order to move it, and was removed from office. The fight to keep the monument off cost the state of AL court system money. The Chief Justice of a poor state shouldn't be wasting resources on something he had to know would lose (and cost the state money). He's just an irresponsible man. Another sign of his irresponsibility is the arrest record of his son Caleb.

You allege you live in Florida. I live here in CA and in a so blue, it is next to black, state. I respect Moore. I have for a long time. I believe I am not the only poster in the west that respects Moore. I doubt he is what is wrong with republicans either. Moore took over the court in an as is condition and I find nothing saying he broke the system. The monument was outside the court of law. And harmed nobody. Moore never was congress at the time. Today he has a good chance to get there. Yes I believe the left wingers fought him and got the monument removed. Did you see his plaque in his court when he had the monument outside the building?
