The Republican tax plan changes the way taxes are calculated for graduate students in America.

The result is a gigantic increase in taxes - which of course must be paid immediately, not as part of a student loan arrangement.
    As an example:
Graduate students don't have an extra $10,000 to fork over in new Republican taxes.

This is an unprecedented erection of a barrier to education, and it specifically targets those who are advancing America in areas upon which we are depending for future economic growth and which are certain to be on the forefront of world economic competition.

The constant assault on science by this administration has to stop. The idea of billing graduate students for huge tax increases that are then to be handed over to the 1% is a crime against America's future. Plus, it works to exclude from education those who weren't born to wealth.

So, Republicans add $10,000 of taxes to graduate students ...

    ... and nobody cares??

    Seriously?

I think they are adding another 50k or more per year in free money for tuition as taxable income.

Well, I agree the article could be written more clearly, because it does hide the important element in the change of rules.

The writer should have explicitly identified and added in all the items being taxed - which is a central point.

Basically, Republicans decided to treat tuition benefits as income, for example.

It's not so much that the change is totally illogical as a matter of tax, but if this change is made, very few can go to graduate school, because they aren't wealthy enough.

Im tempted to say that libs should use the same arguments to defend this that they used to defend Obamacare, I.e. costs go up every year, paying one's fair share, and so on. I might even be tempted to quote Obama himself and say these students should budget their money better and on Thanksgiving have a family conversation about taxes. But I won't.

They are special people. They have a right to collect an income plus waived costs figures of over $70,000 per year. How dare the Feds tax them?

The GOP has morphed into a party of sociopaths. It's where sociopaths of society can hang their hat. Anything that improves society and living conditions for all is taboo. They should be shunned and tarred and feathered...not be elected into public office. Referring to a government official as a republican public servant is an oxymoron. They have no souls, so filling the gaping void with material kickbacks from corporate America is all they can relate to and identify with. The POS in The White House is the quintessential example.

    They are STUDENTS.

And, the Republicans want to add $10,000 per year in NEW TAXES.

You don't have anything even close to a justification for that.

The "total picture challenged" on the left always do this. It's intellectually dishonest but justified by the "party of goodness" because they are the "party of goodness".

Students work to pay off the tuition - through research, teaching and related work. But, Republicans want to tax them both on the tuition AND the work.

More importantly, if Republicans add $10,000 per year in immediately due taxes, they pretty much end higher education for all but the wealthy from American and other countries.

This is just a monumentally irresponsible act that targets education, and STEM programs in particular.

The example is ludicrous. The real question is why college tuition is so high requiring high tuitions. If the D's were really interested in the welfare of college students they'd be working to cut out all the BS cost adders that colleges have implemented resulting in such high tuitions.

Come'on man - think it through. The standard deduction takes care of this situation. Hilarious.

How about asking these young and healthy STUDENTS how much they're required to pay for health insurance or any of the other taxes and fees they're forced to fork over. Fair share means fair share, these STUDENTS have welfare queens and illegals to support and they don't have the future these students have and desperately need their tax money for humanitarian reasons.

Have we finally met a tax the left doesn't like?

52% of the money the Uni of Michigan takes in goes to retirement and pension benefits.

There is a new $10,000 deduction on top of what already exists?

They are getting something of value. If someone leaves their kid their business you want to tax the value of that.

I think when enough people get fed up with how the republicans do business, you'll have change; until then everyone (except the 1%) will just have to suffer.

If they are getting paid by the college then it is income. I have to pay taxes on my income and THEN I pay for any college courses I want to take.

Does the bill say it is immediate or is there a schedule of payment? Why do people think the working class middle class should pay for their college education so they can make twice as much income as them?

The catch is that universities have a hard time competing with industry for experts.

And, promising pensions is far cheaper than paying up front salary.

Then, guys like YOU come along and make compensation comparisons on one single dimension - a dimension chosen to make some lame partisan political point.

    Pathetic.
