It's probably always been there. With the advent of a camera phone and social media, people now can post these crazy scenes for everybody to see.
I remember a rare shooting but not Road Rage as common as today. Unless you count flipping someone off. The universal sign of friendship So they would give you the finger back and each went there own way. Sort of a quantitative and not a qualitative. I'm sure road rage goes back to the earliest automobile vs the horse drawn wagon sharing the road.
Is it because life is so fast? If someone cuts you off or drives too slowly in the fast lane then it has an impact on you. When you are sharing the road with thousands of other motorists you Iike things to go smoothly. If they don't go smoothly, your equilibrium is affected and perhaps you over react.
This attack sticks in my mind I was followed after I cut someone up (Yes my fault) so I drove to the local police station and they f*cked off.
And that's what happens when we make it easy for any kook or hothead to go around brandishing a deadly weapon in public.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_Noye Who needs a gun when you've got a kitchen knife! Under UK law you are not allowed to carry one where the driver can access it from the drivers seat position and is actually a crime already UK wide. (Even in 1996) Kenneth Noye also melted gold from the Brinks Matt bullion robbery so quite a character. UK is the worst country in the world for road rage http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-192223/UK-retains-road-rage-title.html
I look at it this way -- if someone in their vehicle wants to hold up their middle finger while glaring at me then it's their business. Has no effect on me. If someone in their vehicle shouts out their window something about a SOB then it has no effect on me. Heck just the other day a car slowly passes me and begins to veer over towards me so I take my foot off the gas peddle and the car slips in front of me just missing my front bumper. Had some effect on me but nothing to go ballistic over. I never could tell who was driving the car but they went on driving in a perfect manner. I guess they just misjudged the speed they were passing me and cut over into my lane too soon. Relax folks.
Drive defensively, drive to arrive alive. They're going to bird the wrong person eventually, but you don't have to be that wrong person.
I did a defensive driving course years ago. One of the things I brought away with me was that you have a duty to not raise the temperature on the road. No one elected you sheriff and if some idiot is speeding, cut you off or made rude signs at you, don't respond.
Then there is Human Nature. I'm on the road to get somewhere. Not to be put off because you got an important cell phone call or text message.
Agree, but that's what the lesson was. Don't let someone else make you respond in kind. You could end up dead or killing someone else from a collision or as we see elsewhere from a gun.
