I had a gut feeling Schumer would pull this stunt. Lib's are really playing to the most extreme base on this one. I mean, even the most ardent liberal media blowhard hasn't been able to intellectually put together a real case against Gorsuch, but guess Chucky thinks the D's screaming "he's a radical RW'er" and hates the little guy will do the trick.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Thursday that Democrats will attempt to filibuster Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination, saying he would tilt the Supreme Court too far away from what Democrats want to see.

“After careful deliberation I have concluded that I cannot support Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court,” Mr. Schumer said, announcing his filibuster on the Senate floor.

The speech amounted to a challenge to Republicans, who may now have to decide whether to trigger the “nuclear option” and change the chamber’s rules to curtail the power of the filibuster.

Mr. Schumer, who four years ago himself voted to trigger the nuclear option on all other nominees, told Republicans not to follow his lead.

“The answer isn’t to change the rules, it’s to change the nominee,” the New York Democrat said Thursday.

His announcement came even as the hearings for Judge Gorsuch were still going on, with the American Bar Association telling senators the judge had received the highest rating possible for a nominee.

Eh. I don't see this as the right hill for the Dems to die on. The balance of the court won't change and the majority of the public don't really care. Now if this was their nominee to replace a LW judge, then this would be the better move.

conserve your political capital for a more opportune moment. This isn't it.

I agree. Taking the same approach the R's did by acting like babies is not a good route for them.

It will fail. We have the nuclear option and they are screwed.

They are desperate to keep any news about Trump negative. They can't allow him victories with important seats up for grabs during the midterms

They have no power. They'll be steamrolled under the rules Harry put in play if they try.

    Gorsuch is a lock.

To vote to end debate and allow the GOP to confirm him on a party vote.

Only democrats care what a deranged pedophile Schumer says. Normal people laugh at him. In case they try to block one of the most competent judges in the USA, the Republicans will go nuclear.

No rules put in by Reid allow them to be steam rolled on a Supreme Court pick. It would require changing the rules.

Use it at your own peril. You never know what will come of the futu.....

Right. Conartists on the right don't give a damn about the future.

    All according to plan.

Good, that's exactly what they should do.

Such logic collapses on itself. If the operating assumption is that waging a filibuster means losing the filibuster, then the filibuster is already lost. Just look at the way two scenarios will play out. One: Filibuster Gorsuch, lose the filibuster, Gorsuch is confirmed and the next nominee is confirmed. Two: Confirm Gorsuch, filibuster the next conservative nominee, lose the filibuster and the next nominee is confirmed. The events take place in a different order, but the results are the same.

It is the Republicans that "pulled a stunt" by not even giving Garland a hearing. That was an abdication of their responsibility as Senators. On a political level, the Democrats are entirely within their rights to block every single Trump nomination going forward.
But two wrongs don't make a right, and I agree with Cubed that this may not be the best fight to pick. It might be better to pick the next fight.

Don't play ignorant. Be honest for a change. You know very well the republicans just followed Joe Biden advice that it's not all right (something along those lines) for the outgoing president to appoint a supreme court judge. The Biden rule on Supreme Court nominations.

Liberal thinking is not conducive to long-term planning, its emotion based and simply incompatible with logical strategy...

Harry already went 9 steps out of 10. Noone will bat an eye at Gorsuch being forced in with the Nuclear Option. Thanks Harry. You guys were warned.

Harry already set the example, and Kaine on the campaign trail talked about going Nuclear again. Now your side gets to watch form the sidelines, powerless. America will be better for it.

Reid put in the rule that if you can't get something because of the rules then change the rules.

And when that day comes, the Republicans will drag out Harry Reid's nuclear option. I always wondered if the Dems ever really thought about what they were doing when they did that and left it laying around for the other side to use. Do politicians take stupid pills? Is it genetic? Training? Lack of oxygen?

It's the increased polarization of Washington. It's at absolutely absurd levels. We don't even identify as Americans the same anymore. It's always some little thing someone is convinced oppresses them.

It's unbelievable how ****ed up this country is.

I agree. Taking the same approach the Republicans did (acting like spoiled brats) is not a good route for them to take.

But...I think there are other considerations in play. I think Schumer and some of the other Democrats feel their constituencies want them to do this...and I think they are doing it to keep faith with those people.

Either way, I think Gorsuch will be confirmed...so the crying from the right is just them doing the crybaby stuff so many of them regularly do.

They thought about trying to stop the backlog of unconfirmed Justices that the Rs were obstructing out of spite. The legal system was backing up like a fat kid with a butt plug.
