Should Australia Day Be changed?

If memory serves me correctly, history taught me that Captain Cook was on a mission of exploration; not invasion. I wonder if Aussies kids are now going to be educated that Australia was invaded, not explored. In 1788 this became Australia, and its time the Aboriginal people got over it and moved on. They are never going to get it all back, so they can forget that idea. They got invaded and conquered after 1788; so what...

 

Cook was in 1770 and not 1788.

 

There was no television back then, definitely no internet. As a young boy back then I had two main ways of learning. Around the dinner table at night and at school. I remember learning at school about the Tasmanian Aboriginals. About how the settlers totally wiped out an entire race of people.. why, because they had the hide to want to live off the land they had lived off for thousands of years. Why did we want the land... Money, greed, trees, minerals, and gold. Was it ours to take, no.

I remember asking Dad why Australia was ruled by a woman in another country (There you go CD), why it wasn't run by Aboriginals. He didn't know, the government never boasted too much about their "Aboriginal Policy", and I don't blame them, it was an atrocious blight on our history.

I asked why we took their country, again he had no answers. Looking back over the decades, my Dad now 98 is much wiser, he now could answer most of my questions, he wishes however he couldn't.

 

CD is not an Aussie so he shouldn't be expected to know that. If he was he would have learnt it at school, I did.

Who is 'we'? Certainly nobody alive today. That's what they did in those days, wrong by our standards today but acceptable back then.

Wow! you were really one confused little boy. Australia has never been ruled by a woman in another country and of course Australia couldn't be run by people with a primitive stone age culture. And there is that 'we' again, who are you talking about? Can't be anyone around today.

My apologies..I should have typed "your partner"...meaning your partner of today...

 

Of course at 8 or 9 you understood politics and the Australian Commonwealth. All I knew was we sang "God save the Queen", I was told she was my queen, but I wondered why she lived in England. I wondered why we couldn't have our own Queen. Maybe I was confused, it is a confusing subject, by CD's posts we are still confused today, maybe I was just young.

 

Firstly, you would DEFINITELY know if it was her who posted.

But since you brought her up, I have a little story.

My partner is a full blooded Gumbaynggir woman. She was raised in an orphanage (she was not an orphan) and kept away from "outside blacks" including family. At 15 her mother came to take her home, what she saw shocked her. She knew she was Aboriginal but was shocked at how "disenchanted" her people had become. Centuries of racial hatred towards them (Blacks) had left the men disenfranchised, (http://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/disenfranchised) and most turned to the white man's poisons, Drugs and alcohol.

Within weeks she set off on her own, a young (15) Aboriginal girl. She came to Sydney and obtained a scholarship and enrolled herself into a Catholic Girls School where she completed her schooling. She again returned home, married, had two children, started work as a teaching assistant. About 10 years later her marriage was disintegrating and she saw no future for her children in their own country. Rife with racism, racial murders, drugs and alcoholism she packed up her two sons, left her husband and brought her boys back to Sydney to give them a good start. n Since then her oldest son has done a mechanical apprenticeship and has been employed ever since, approximately 10 years at the same workshop.

She has studied and obtained her Certificate in early childhood education and has been employed for about 10 years in child care. A day doesn't go past, when we don't meet someone in the street here who either was a child she cared for or a parent of one. She is always greeted with open arms and warm hugs, smiles and stories about the children.

She says, even though it's back breaking thankless work, underpaid and archaic conditions, she loves child care and sees it as the best way to make a difference.

She doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs, won't even take aspirin until she is in agony.

Now me, I am a bit of a rebel, I have long hair and a beard, I dress always in black and look more like a Hell's Angel than a biochemist. I have been driving for over 43 years and for the past 25 years they have been V8s or my latest an XR6 Turbo. Always hot looking cars. In 40 of those 43 years I had never, not once been randomly pulled over by the police. Yes I had been randomly drug and alcohol tested, yes I have been booked for speeding, but never just randomly pulled over.

HOWEVER, since I have been with my partner, and only when she has been in the car, I have been randomly pulled over over 20 times, never charged with anything, just searched and sometimes vilified.

You figure it out. I have learnt to hate police. Definitely learnt to be wary of them and not trust them.

 

Of course when the English arrived, they found "uncivilised" people. Not good civilised people who sent entire families in leaking wooden sailing ships to the other side of the world, to be incarcerated in primitive prisons, shackled like animals, if they survived the trip, and usually for the heinous crimes of stealing bread to feed their children.
England, a great example of civilisation, several times the population of England was reduced by approx. 40% by disease, usually the "Black Death", a plague brought about by the filthy living conditions. A civilisation that had had 13 civil wars, often over a dispute between relatives in power or because of the atrocious way it treated it's won people.
A country that built it's wealth on stealing from other countries with less advanced and armed peoples.

They (Aboriginals) didn't have leaders, all elders were on the council, they weren't very democratic, not like the USA, the home of democracy. The USA is so democratic that when a big decision needed to be made, they declared war on themselves, a war which some people are still fighting today. Very democratic .... NOT.

Of course the Aboriginals also fought amongst themselves, not like the Europeans. MUCH

That depends. Being disrespectfull and/or derogatory often times depends on your point of view, or whether you are the giver or the butt of the exchange, or whether it was done knowingly and with intent, or done as black humour, or done in fun or has 'friendly' insult. It would also depend on whether the agrieved party deserved the disrespect or whether it was done malicisly or deliberately to get a hoped for response.
Being disrespectful and derogatory can be arguable concepts that are not always cut and dried.
