Is there something wrong with living in a primitive state?

I suppose it does depend on the context in which it was being used, which then developed into an offensive term.

I suppose there is if they aren't happy living it. Simple fact is that some cultures disappear and some grow and flourish. So it has been through the ages. To lament the first boat of Europeans to Australia is to lament that your country was ever conceived and created. Good lord appreciate what you have and celebrate it. And then help the Aborigines....that stay stranded in poverty and dispair--- and bring them in to the fold so they can flourish too.

In the U.S our Indian nations show different examples. The ones that assimilate and take advantage of the opportunities are the nations that are wealthy and have the ability to promote their language and culture for generations of Indian families.

The ones that see the pilgrams as pillagers and murderers...are the nations inflicted with alcoholism, poverty and dispair. They struggle and die off. I think its a shame the Aborigines live the way they do...angry, resentful, drugs, alcoholism and crime. I say fix it. Make them Australians.

In my experience most of them wish to live just like the rest of us but they don't want to spend the time earning our livestyle. Don't worry, I know plenty of other Australians who don't want to work but still want to have everything as well but the attitude is far more prevelent and deep seated amongst Aboriginals. The only way to pull the Aboriginals out of thier malaise is take the children away from the parents before the parents have time to instill their hopelesness into them.

    Your being resentful and malicious.
The government policies are working. In one or two generations, things will be sweet.
BTW The aborigines are a distinct people recognised as such by all future governments, our Queen as head of state, the UN and more importantly other 'first nations'. If governments or Churches take their children away from them now, it will be genocide.

What I find interesting in this issue, is that not too long ago, in this latest intervention, government was touting policy to remove at risk children from their families again. NOW, while I do consider there may be a call for such in some cases (which I would suggest would be very small amount) it would seem that history is no education for some people. Luckily for these people the important people in this issue are far better educated than those calling for this.

    Just a side note...

    A couple of points:

I don think we should celebrate the way it was colonised, but certainly can celebrate our nationhood! There is a big difference, which is what is being discussed in terms of an appropriate occasion we can celebrate embracing all people with a positive unifying effect to the best degree.

    Re: Assimilation
Yes, the ones that assimilate want to assimilate and have opportunity to do so, can do well in a western setting with western values, which is the same here in Australia. They are evolving like every European and Asian person on the planet who has seen a transformation into what we classify as modern living in the last 100 years. The only difference is that progress was restricted for Indigenous peoples for many many years or since colonisation. Those that don't want to assimilate are caught in a cycle that was created by colonisers, which can differ from region to region depending on attitudes with regards to progress!

Getting back to primitive lifestyle though: if you haven't got a mobile phone and internet connection today, you are considered as living a primitive lifestyle........is it bad? Only to those of us who value money, which is our greatest indication for supposed success! Could I return to the lifestyle of our forefathers living on dirt floors or housing without insulation? No, not now, but obviously would adapt if I had to. It is probably way too long down the line for Aboriginal people to live their so called primitive lifestyle because it was ruined by the colonisers and much had been lost that would have sustained that lifestyle in its full state!

Anyway, we can celebrate our nation without celebrating a day of sorrow for others, including convicts who were brought here as simply punishment, especially when the land was claimed under false pretences of Terra Nullius!

Call it Federation Day and celebrate it on the first of January and be done with it. Move on to more important things that affect us NOW, learn from the past not live in it.

The British Admiralty declared that the three common names used, Australia, Terra Australis and New Holland being the same place should be known as Australia.
    It was in 1824.
We should find out the date of that document, for that day, would truly be Australia Day. I like the Federation Day too, but people would have a problem with it being on New Years Day (They want a holiday) :)

We have tried that, but they don't want to be Australians. The only time they want to be Australians is when they can smell money and awards. Otherwise they want to be Aboriginals, and we all know what that means; more tens of $billions spent on a problem that will never be fixed.

Yes I am resentful, I go to work five days a week and pay my taxes. I do resent welfare parasites who will not work for their keep even when they are perfectly capable of doing so. Malicious, no, just telling it like it is.

Ha ha ha ha ha! I heard the same story two generations ago!

No, taking the children away from their stupid, hopeless parents will save them. I would love to see a study comparing the so called 'stolen generation' with their siblings who were not taken from their parents.

How is it going to be ""sweet" when Aboriginal people are pushing and encouraging Aboriginal youth to return to an Aboriginal traditional lifestyle? A hunting and gathering stone-age lifestyle. What's going to happen to these youth who have returned to a traditional lifestyle over the next decade or so? They will end up breeding like wild rabbits in the bush like the previous generations of outback Aboriginals and then blame Australians again in 10 - 20 years time, because they and their off-spring are not educated, and are not up to the same health standards as Australian children. Aboriginal people returning to a traditional lifestyle is going to start the vicious cycle all over again.

It's the Aboriginal peoples own philosophy in wanting to return to a traditional lifestyle is their biggest handicap, because it will never be compatible or in synchronisation with Australian society or the modern world that wants to advance and progress.

Yes, there are tribes in other countries that are living a primarily hunter gatherer lifestyle, but they are also just one or two tribes; not 200 - 300 like Australian Aboriginals, and they don't blame the Government if something goes wrong within their societies like Australian Aboriginals do.

If Aboriginies were assimilated into Australian culture---it would be a huge opportunity for them. What is keeping them in "chains" is your liberal enablers. Sometimes you gotta just tell people---screw your culture! We won't enable it anymore. It sucks.

Our Black Americans have this problem. A lot of resentment, anger and anti-Americanism in black culture, the schools and encouraged by white "elites" and black leaders. The history here---with slavery---was much worse then the clash, war and defeat of nations such that happened with American Indians. But ultimately people died for them to be free---during the civil war and much more current during the civil rights fight.

The time is now for all people here in America to get moving and get ahead. I get frustrated that this anger and resentment is nutured and encouraged and allowed to grow. It doesn't do anything positive. Assimilate already----and succeed.

I agree. I have always believed that it's the Australian Aboriginals own philosophy of wanting to live by their ancestral culture that has been their biggest handicap. Yes. keep all your ancestral traditions alive just like other cultures do, but also be prepared to take advantage of what other modern cultures have to give by enhancing your culture.

Australian Aboriginals are caught in a web of contradiction. Some want to return to a traditional lifestyle with no connection to Australian values and Australian society, but then want to adopt and use Australian society values when they can obtain profit and money, which is not part of a Aboriginal traditional lifestyle.

I strongly believe that Aboriginal people in positions of authority are constantly perpetuating animosity against non-indigenous Australians. They are now attempting to convince everyone that the British came to Australia in 1788 as invades and conquers, and not as explorers.

I personally don't believe that the Aboriginal people will ever be a truly happy people until they are the Lords & Masters over all Australia, and until Australians are in a situation of where they are in now. Aboriginal people remind me of a people that is always biting the hand that feeds them. I believe we should stop hand feeding them like a bunch of big babies and having our hands bitten. Put the bowl of food down, and they either eat it or starve.

Two generations ago, the Aboriginals were still classed as fauna. Terra Nullius was in force in Australia until 1964.

No matter what dribble get perpetrated on here the facts remain the same. In 1788, Cook was on a voyage of discovery, not invasion, and Australia was discovered in 1788; not invaded. I think it could be argued successfully that no one told Cook to invade Australia in 1788. It could also be argued that considering the local Aborigines were considered fauna under Terra Nullius, it would mean Australia was uninhabited.
Though some might argue there is evidence that the Dutch discovered Western Australia before Cook in 1788.

I would also like to know why are Australians financially responsible for all this?

Why are the Aboriginal people not seeking financial compensation from the British Government who supposedly took their land? Australian tax payers didn't take their land back in 1788, the British Government did.

What absolute rubbish! Fact is that the Australian government has thrown everything at the Aboriginal problem for generations but have achieved almost nothing. Ten of billions down the drain.
I see no response to the rest of my post.

I suppose it won't be long before we do say, screw our culture it is destructive on the planet.......

What parts of their culture would you like for them to give up that will make it better?
