It's a shame that commonsense doesn't kick In until we are older.
You must so regret what you did in your youth. What do your kids think?

The only thing I regret, is the time in the joint.

My kids, I have a 30 year old son, a 29 year old & just turned 12 year old daughter... They know pops does what he's gotta do, to provide above what family needs/wants.

Do you regret getting caught or doing the time?

LOL, I get asked that a lot. The only thing I regret, is missing that time with my kids free.

Honestly though, I wouldn't change a thing. The experiences have helped shape me into the old fart I am today... As a matter of fact, they probably saved my life.

You mind if I ask... Are you from New York?

Exactly. The salient point Ben Franklin was making is that we need a safety net, but that safety net should never be a comfortable place to live.

    Nuh. Australia.
Did you ever think you might get shot, leaving your wife with little kids to raise by herself?

Why does it have to be the governments job?

Because you and i and most everyone else would rather talk about it than take action that's why.

Just asking love. Your posting style reminds me of 2 females from long ago. Oddly enough, one was from Australia, & the other from New York. Jenva & slacker respectfully.

EDIT: Anywy, I'll catch up L8r. Gotta get me some kip.

It starts and ends on the local level. The further away the resources the greater the waste. Contribute to your local food bank, volunteer at the local shelter or soup kitchen.

I don't know if i can achieve anything that way. The government can do it more efficiently than a group of do gooders.

Yes you can. You can if you have passion for the cause. The government does not have passion. They have money. Money that they throw blindly at problems hoping more will stick than not.

This country was founded by a group of do gooders.

So far a MASSIVE majority, over 75% of voters in this poll, believe its the role of government to provide a safety net for the poor, involving healthcare, food, housing, and money for basic neccessities.

Good to see America still has a heart. :)

Goverment is supposed to do the following:

    -maintain order and safety.
    -maintain basic infrastructure.
-protect the weakest among us (children and the poor).

everything else is discretionary, in my view. Including funding for the arts and sciences.

But the do-gooder topic is here. I am happy to find out that racist and do-gooder are not mutually exclusive categories.

    "Original Post."

"OP" is commonly used to refer to the first message of a thread as the original post. The person who posted is is called the "OPer."

The poll does not ask the REAL question:

"Should the government forcible take money from you to give to other people - or more accurately what is left after the government takes a large percentage of it for itself?"

That is the REAL question, isn't it?

No actually this is about should government help the poor.

My apology if my off topic remark threw you off. I did not expect that comment to be taken with such sweeping regard. If it has made you happy then ... enjoy.

    Fair enough.

As to the topic, government should help the poor. Frozen corpses on the sidewalk each morning is unsightly, if for no other reason.
