WHO is 'throwing to the dogs'? We are not responsible for them. We are random strangers. We don't have any right to interfere in their lives, any more than they have a right to interfere in ours. Such paternalism is disturbing, to be honest.

It's none of our business! Why can't you leave them in peace to adapt or perish, as they see fit?

And 'get them treatment' for what? They've made their choice, and they free to unmake it any time they like. More importantly, they're adults who've freely made those lifestyle choices. They're not children dying of cancer, or Third Worlders starving through no fault of their own.

When you take them from the city and stop them from crapping in the streets and remove them to the desert to die you have indeed interfered

No one is TAKING THEM from the city - they are being banned from sleeping on the streets. Two entirely different things.

Furthermore, they can live (lawfully) in the city any time they want. It's their choice.

So how do they get to the desert if nobody takes them?

We could do what Mexico does.

    Lets export our problems north.

Canada is an open free society, eh?

"starve in the desert" was a figure of speech. I don't care where they go. As long as it's lawful, it's none of my business.

Why do you need to know 'where it's lawful'? Are you planning to become homeless and need ideas? If not, your only concern is where it's NOT lawful.

And why do the stomachs of random strangers concern you?

To say 'let' is to suggest that they have no control over their own lives - like small children. We are discussing ADULTS in a free and democratic nation, are we not?

Indeed. All families should help any such members within their ranks. We're agreed that the abandonment of damaged loved ones to the streets is an outrage, so long as the damaged person is willing to behave themselves. Obviously, if they're unwilling to behave it means they don't want help, in which case there's nothing anyone can do. Let them live out the fate they've chosen for themselves.

Use for private restrooms as in any business establishment is the sole discretion of the owner and may be for customer use only. Public restrooms as located in city parks, airports, libraries, govt buildings etc are a free for all. So no, they're not being denied the right to use the restroom.

I would guess where if there is a bathroom they can use, they would use it - otherwise when nature calls.....

I would love to see all the folks screaming for the rights of the homeless to open up their homes. Let the homeless come into their homes and use the toilet, take a shower, eat from their refrigerators, sleep on their floors. I would guess that nearly 100% of the homeless would be unwelcomed in people's homes. JMO

If they have nowhere else to go, Yes I believe a person should have the right to live on the street. Homelessness in and of itself should not be a crime.

Or they could do what the red states did and just make homelessness itself a crime.

Adults who are mentally ill?? You simply don't understand the problem whatsoever. Quit listening to right wing blogs all the time.

Just as a practical question, where exactly do you think homeless people should be permitted to sleep if the shelter is closed? Where else is there?

You easily can. Open up your home to a few of them. Let them sleep under the same roof as you and your family.

Drug abuse, apathy, self disrespect is not a mental issue, it's a lifestyle choice. I would guess that less than 1% of the homeless have true mental issues. Nearly every single homeless person I see has no problem panhandling, drinking booze, smoking cigarettes or doing drugs. Life is hard, so what, it's hard for everyone. Get over it and get a job. If life was easy then children would be running corporate America.
