People who rig elections have already 'abandoned democracy'.

“Before I called Bernie Sanders, I lit a candle in my living room and put on some gospel music. I wanted to center myself for what I knew would be an emotional phone call.
I had promised Bernie when I took the helm of the Democratic National Committee after the convention that I would get to the bottom of whether Hillary Clinton’s team had ***rigged*** the nomination process, as a cache of emails stolen by Russian hackers and posted online had suggested. I’d had my suspicions…”
POLITICO, Inside Hillary Clinton’s Secret Takeover of the DNC, When I was asked to run the Democratic Party after the Russians hacked our emails, I stumbled onto a shocking truth about the Clinton campaign., By DONNA BRAZILE November 02, 2017. (*** mine)

and they should also have no say in our criminal and civil laws?

sounds like you basically want a large portion of our society to be slaves.

If they can’t make life decisions on their own then why would they ever be deemed intelligent enough to make life decisions for others?

I see I am the only Yes vote thus far - 16 against.

We are Constititional Republic - the point of which is to limit "Tyranny of the Majority" - aka "Pure Democracy". - 50+1 -Simple Majority Mandate

We have failed to respect the founding principle - in favor of "Utilitarianism" - coupled with Tyranny of the minority = Authoritarianism - the natural outcropping of pure democracy - and we have known this for millennia - hence the term "Tyranny of the Majority"

Get with the program people .. 100% fail rate thus far on our civic's -- which is understandable -- given 12 years of school and we do not teach kids the founding principle ... but that less of an excuse for you folks.

    If that was subtle...

But it was believable, so if it was a parody: well-played, Ron.

If you mean sending American troops, that is a loser. Supposedly our military has already tried playing this scenario out in simulations, and found no way for us to win. But even if we could triumph, it doesn't take a military genius to look at the logistics of us so far away, and the Chinese mainland so close, to realize that trying to hold on to any victory would be essentially impossible (unless we brought nukes to the island-- and I do not offer this as a sane option).

Haven't we fought enough wars that we knew were unwinnable? Would we really want to have another large force (and this would need exceed our numbers in Korea or any prior, "peacetime," troop count, in West Germany, during the Cold War), permanently stationed in a foreign country, under constant threat? It would require both a sizable military investment, as well as quite probably a sizable financial one (unless Taiwan & our allies were going to foot the bill, indefinitely). As gung-ho-less as that might sound, from America, it is the pragmatic fact. And Biden certainly knows this, and is clearly not disposed toward getting involved in any such grand misadventure.

Nor do I think the American people would have much appetite for such a war. While our technology is superior, they have a lot more people to draw on. And if the Chinese got into such a fight with us, it would be too great a blow to their pride, to give up, just because they were taking heavy losses. Which means that these would likely be the heaviest casualty counts that U.S.troops have suffered, in quite some time.

Now, someone, give me the argument that this would be too vital to U.S. security, to be able to take a pass.

I think you are living in the America of another era.

Well, nominally, it is about a revolt against our government, our system, & our rule of law, and the installing of an autocrat. But it appears that Ron was just playing devil's advocate, probably curious as to how many bites he might get.
