Yeah, haven't really heard of them in my country. So when I found out one died in 1999 aged 53, that was sad. Then I found out the other one died in 2013 aged 70, that was sad too... Then 5 minutes ago I found out about him losing his jaw and his ability to speak to thyroid cancer... That was sad. Siskel & Ebert... What can I say? I remember that episode from The Critic that featured them back in the 1990s, and over the years they've reviewed some of my favourite motion pictures; and finding out about what happened to those two; is kind of depressing, tbh.
Oddly enough, I was never into movie reviews, if I wanted to see a particular film, I saw it for My own reasons, like the Star Wars series, opinions would not have stopped me from seeing them, the reviews were seen by me as spoilers of a sort.
I started watching them when they were on public TV and followed both and Ebert till his passing. I still go to his sight for reviews. I always liked Ebert. If he liked a film I would usually also. His taste matched mine. Not always, but 95% of the time. I haven't found a reviewer that matches my taste since. There are some reviewers that I look at as "Get over yourself" and others I wonder if they watched the same movie I did.
For some movies, like Star Wars, I would read the review AFTER seeing the movie to see if the reviewer and I were eye to eye.
