Small Chloroquine Study Halted Over Risk of Fatal Heart Complications

A research trial of coronavirus patients in Brazil ended after patients taking a higher dose of chloroquine, one of the drugs President Trump has promoted, developed irregular heart rates.

A small study in Brazil was halted early for safety reasons after coronavirus patients taking a higher dose of chloroquine developed irregular heart rates that increased their risk of a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia.

Chloroquine is closely related to the more widely used drug hydroxychloroquine. President Trump has enthusiastically promoted them as a potential treatment for the novel coronavirus despite little evidence that they work, and despite concerns from some of his top health officials. Last month, the Food and Drug Administration granted emergency approval to allow hospitals to use chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine from the national stockpile if clinical trials were not feasible. Companies that manufacture both drugs are ramping up production.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The random approval of any drug specifically to treat Covid-19 comes at a very high risk. I can 'almost' understand using experimental treatment on people that are on ventilator and have little to lose, but not as a prophylaxis or for mild cases.

Why do I think you posted this because your president suggested this may be beneficial in treating the Chinese virus.
You do understand it is a doctor that prescribes this medication. There are risks involved in the taking of any medication as you would know if you ever listened to or read any of the side effects listed.
BTW your link requires me pay to read.

You're exactly right. I posted this to show to you and other Trump believers that he was using this drug as a magic pill to treat coronavirus and because he did, the demand for this drug went through the roof despite all the warnings. This proves one thing, you absolutely cannot believe or trust a politician trying to score political points rather than medical knowledge and scientific proof that it was not going to be anything more than anecdotal for treating Covid-19. Again, trusting Trump has claimed lives.

And yes, I have been a nurse for over 40 years and have full knowledge of how a drug is prescribed. You can find this story anywhere with a google search to articles that aren't behind a paywall. Try doing that.

The drug has worked for thousands. Anyone suggesting it should not be used has his head up his ass.

But it must be used properly.

You are wrong and you are using your post to point out that some people may have the risk of a heart attack because they use some derivation of this drug. President Trump told the public many times that he is no doctor but there may be some benefit to the use of Hydroxychloroquine but it does have promise in some trials. He has said that very same sentence in nearly every press briefing. Some idiot in AZ takes a completely different drug with a similar name that he used to clean his fish tank and dies and its President Trumps' fault. One of a hundred ongoing studies on Hydroxychloroquine shows if underlying conditions are right any drug may contribute to heart attacks.
Give it a break. Let the researchers figure it out instead of leaping on anything and everything negative just to slam your president for no reason.
I have asked this of a few here who continue to poo-poo Hydroxychloroquine as an option.
You are on a respirator given little chance of living and are offered the option of taking this drug,
    A. Yes
    B. No

You're making excuses for him again. This was a dangerous drug to so lightly pander without medical advice or thorough testing before thousands of prescriptions had been given out to desperate Trumpers who were fooled by him -- yet again.

This Hydroxychloroquine topic has been beaten to death. I will stop as I understand that the left really believes that President Trump was trying to shove one of these pills down their throats every morning with their coffee. If you really believe Trump was running a commercial for Hydroxychloroquine during his nightly briefings I cannot help guide you to any other conclusion. I wish you well.

I will ask again. No dodging, no deflection, a simple one letter answer will do,

You are on a respirator given little chance of living and are offered the option of taking this drug,
    A. Yes
    B. No

As a medical professional and a former manager of a home respiratory company, I can tell you with 100% certainty that I would gladly accept a ground-up chocolate covered strawberry through a tube than a drug that was sold to dumbasses by Trump, one that had no clinical trials and tons of warnings attached to it.

So you answer is B. No Hydroxychloroquine under any circumstances. I appreciate your response.

One last question, as a medical professional and a former manager of a home respiratory company I am sure this will be easy for you. Please tell us the name of any drug on the market without any warnings attached to it?
    Just curious.

This drug has been used without problem for decades for things such as arthritis and malaria. Now all of a sudden, it's too dangerous to use?

If Trump touted the vegan diet as great, vegans across the country would become carnivores overnight. It's almost hilarious.

No it has been used despite concerning side effects because the benefits of using it outweighed the risks. That is not the case with COVID where we are seeing cardiomyopathy as a symptom

Since the vegan diet, unless very carefully undertaken, is harmful it would simply be another example of how wrong Trump is

Correct and it has also been a mainstay drug in the treatment of Lupus. And now, patients who have been using this drug for years to treat symptoms of Lupus are finding it difficult to refill their prescriptions due to the over-prescribing and demand for this drug, and all because of Trump's pushing it onto his followers. For these patients, it's a lifesaver. This drug is not an anti-viral drug, it's a drug that works 'in vivo' -- within the cells. This drug has been used with extreme caution, and under close surveillance.

Trump stated "I may take it". Do you or anyone else believe that Trump would actually take this drug? No way in hell would he take this drug. He only wants YOU to take it to see if it works. You are his lab rats and guinea pigs.

Its been used for decades.. Why did they use the higher dose?

Did you stop to ask that before rushing here to rant about Trump?

Roughly half the study participants were given a dose of 450 milligrams of chloroquine twice daily for five days, while the rest were prescribed a higher dose of 600 milligrams for 10 days. Within three days, researchers started noticing heart arrhythmias in patients taking the higher dose. By the sixth day of treatment, 11 patients had died, leading to an immediate end to the high-dose segment of the trial.

This was designed to fail all to make someone look bad.. Pathetic.

    Notice the dosage....

That's why Trump didn't say a word about Cloriquine and he didn't say a word about using fish tank cleaner. The best thing that can happen to the NY Times is for us to ban the use of crappy Canadian paper for newsprint so it can be used for its more important purpose of sh*tpaper.
