So besides magazine size what makes an "Assault Weapon" deadly?

Seriously take the mag sizes out of the equation, because it is a separate issue what makes an assault rifle so deadly.

All the other features are purely cosmetic or for personal comfort, a pistol grip does not make a rifle more deadly, but it makes it more comfortable to some.

Is that it you guys want guns to only be uncompfortable, because if they are uncompfortable no one will use them?

First I really wish people would stop buying the line "assault rifle".
It really is not a real term. No gun is advertised as an "assault rifle".
But it is not more deadly.
We had 2 police officers killed, other wounded and 7 civilians shot by a 70 yearold man with a Ruger Mini 14 some years ago.
Just a wood stock camp rifle with a 10 round mag.
Nothing fancy, just a determined killer who was able to out shoot the Palm Bay Police Dept in a running gun battle between two shopping centers.
Shooting and reloading faster than the cops with thier service revolvers.
Its not the gun that is the problem, its people.

Truth is, many politicians want to ban guns entirely, but they know they will never be able to do this all at once. If you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, he’ll jump out. But if you place a frog into a pot of lukewarm water and slowly turn up the heat, it will boil to death before it realizes what's happening.

Assault Rifles do exist. They are a military weapon such as the M-16 or AK47. It is a selective fire weapon that uses an intermediate cartridge. The term Assault Rifle comes from the German Sturmgewehr as in the StG 44.

Mag size is very irrelevant. You could sit in a room for a couple of hours changing mags and you could end up being fast enough to change a mag without interrupting your rate of fire.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls4Uq1aCiTA

Let us not forget that the gunman at Virginia Tech. used a 9mm and a .22 pistol to murder 34 people. This shows us that no one firearm is more deadly than another, a bullet is a bullet is a bullet. Why have I seen no major attempt to fix the people committing these atrocities. The people trying to take these firearms and there components away have shown that they don't even know anything about them. Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

Not talking about German "terms" I am asking you to find me a semi auto rifle that is advertised as an assault rifle.
Be careful, I own AR15s and AK47s and my stepson has a Sig 556.
All bought new and nothing in the books call it an assault rifle.
Even in the military its just "rifle".
So try again. Is "assault weapon" a real term or is it a media driven name to make it sound oh so scary.

The problem here is that so many of you think that Assault Weapon and Assault Rifle are synonyms.

Assault Weapon is a term in US law. Assault Rifle is a category of military weapon. It has a very specific definition and that is a selective fire weapon that uses an intermediate cartridge.

Stop confusing the two very different terms.

Stop using either term, find me a advertisement using either of those terms selling guns in the US.

    Why should I?

I'm not saying that an M-16 isn't a rifle but it belongs to a certain category of rifle and that is an Assault Rifle, or are you saying carbines don't exist, that Battle Rifles don't exist, that Automatic Rifles don't exist, etc?

People just don't like them because they look "bigger" and "scarier" and "deadlier" than other guns such as hanguns even though they are almost equally the same.

Because the term "assault weapon" is a media driven scare tactic buzzword.
M16s are either full auto or select fire rifle. Or if you are in the military its "weapon".
AR15 and its variants, are SEMI auto fire rifles. Period.

I said it's an Assault Rifle.

You can see that Assault Rifle and Assault Weapon are two different terms, right?

Neither is a correct term, its both a media term and its totally false and neither exist in any manuals or advertisments for the weapons in question.

Assault Rifle is not a media term. It is the technical term for rifles such as the M-16, AK47, StG 44, etc.

Since there is no current law in effect defining what an "assault weapon" is, it does not exist. It is now just a label without any definition.

They don't like them because they are black, dang racists!

Since when does the manufacturer decide what something is? If a car company makes a hatchback and calls it a plane does it make it so?

comparitively speaking, based on your definition no assault rifles were used in the last 10 mass shootings. Why ban those guns? Why ban any of those that have never been used on this soil for criminal acitivity?
The kind of assault rifle you are talking about falls under the "machine gun" category and are rare compared to the number or regular semi-auto rifles. Your just thinking about it the way the media tells you it's ok to think. That's all

Please come back when you know what you're talking about.

The media did not invent the term Assault Rifle.

    - - - Updated - - -

A machine gun and an assault rifle are two entirely different weapons.
