So besides magazine size what makes an "Assault Weapon" deadly?

Well yes. Machine guns along with assault rifles were legislated to be registered at the same time so in one way, they are very much the same, legally. As far as description, a machine gun fires continually with one trigger pull but an assault rifle will have select fire, making it a combination semi-automatic, burst fire, and in some cases, full auto and lighter to carry; thus, the term "assault rifle".

To the uninitiated, they are the same, to anyone with any knowledge the difference is known. The unwashed think that an AR-15 is the same.

Yep. The AR-15 is the civilian version of the M-16 (Assault Rifle) and as such is a semiautomatic rifle, unless modified.

Basically just another long gun that scares some because of what they have seen on TV and in the Movies. I pulled up a movie the other day that had some hunters with "assault rifles" shooting full auto. Nothing could be more deceiving but then you often see in movies that one shot kills. Another misconception.

It's funny because most soldiers will fire Assault Rifles on semiauto even if it does come with burst or full. In fact, in most the select after Safe is Semi........ the AK47 I believe is one of the exceptions.

To be fair though the only real way you can tell if it's an AR-15 or an M-16 is to look at the selector.

Yes. In fact most AR-15's have Safe/Semi-auto/Burst, but cannot go into burst because it would take different parts and machining and is also totally illegal to make that happen. Heck, with worn parts, I can make an ancient 1911 handgun full auto. Still illegal.

The law poses penalties for breaking the law but never stops criminals from breaking the law.

In an effort to reduce drunk driving we could ban all alcohol above 60 proof (30% alcohol by volume) and ban all vodka. You can get rum, bourbon, gin, whatever hard liquor you want as long as it's not above 60 proof and it's not vodka.

That is the logic behind the assault weapons ban. In theory I can't get an AR-15 with a pistol grip, but I can get a Ruger Mini 14 with a rifle grip. Both rifles fire the same cartridge at the same speed and have the same potential magazine capacity so it's pretty much just as deadly as the AR-15. If the pistol grip AR-15 gets banned nothing happens to the Mini 14 and it's just assumed nobody will use one of those instead.

Seriously? Thats your arguement? Please, just stop. You can be so stupid to not know when you are dead wrong.

Wrong, we are not talking combat weapons, we are talking civilian weapons. Keep working at it.

You made the claim that Assault Rifles do not exist. You are wrong.

AR15s are not assault rifles. Keep working to prove your point.
And while people are working hard to take my AR, just what I said would start happening.
How may shots were fired in Boston yesterday?

I never said the AR15 is an assault rifle. Are you capable of reading?

To answer your question, it is always who the person is pulling the trigger that makes it deadly.

    Panzer is correct.

Assault rifle is a select fire weapon firing an intermediate cartridge.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle

Assault weapon is a made up term that is used to apply to all manner of scary looking guns.

so, an assault rifle is any weapon with a SELECT FIRE, not a common ordinary semi automatic. Well, hell, I already knew that. I can be conservative and estimate that 90% of AR-15's are approved for civilian use because they are not select fire. Everything else is about permits and licensing, at a high cost.

I have an ak47, it is not an assualt rifle. It is a semi automatic rifle. One trigger pull one bullet. There is no select fire switch on my ak. So you cannot classify every ak as a "so called assualt weapon"

Big and scary is enough reason for liberal politicians to ban anything. This is why I wear pants.

My oh my, what a pleasant surprise watching you split hairs on your side of the fence. You don't own, cannot own, or discuss in public, anything firearm, air rifle, slingshot, bow and arrow. Now your governmnet can do what ever it chooses to do..errr like ummm........we need to sterilze our children! We must do it for the sake of the children!!!! NO MORE B-DAY PARTIES AT SCHOOL!!!! They are super germ factories. How in thee hell do you expect 1) Your children to build resistance to common everday germs, 2) They all breathing on each other day after day, anyway, so that solves nothing. Just another brick in the wall.....................

subjects.............what part escapes you? The part about your socialist government decided no more b-day parties in public schools? For fear of spreading germs? Really? Seriously? I mean, just stop and think it through, all the way through.
    ...........or the no firearm thing?
or was it the "brick in the wall" comment?

    Obama lost yesterday. Period.
