Angela Merkel is--at the very least--center-left (some would say a bit further to the left). That is hardly comparable with Helmut Schmidt or Helmut Kohl (who were chancellors under Reagan); or Gerhard Schroder (who was chancellor for part of the time under George W. Bush; I admit that I am unaware if he visited Germany during Merkel's tenure).

As for Angela Merkel, she was the German chancellor for the entire time of Barack Obama's presidency; and, since she was his political soulmate, it is really quite unsurprising that he would feel no compunction about visiting Germany during her tenure.

Note: President Trump certainly has his flaws--he is boastful, arrogant, and coarse--but to constantly be on the lookout for any possible way to criticize the man is, in my opinion, more like an act of The Resistance than it is a thoughtful, analytical critique.

I see the point if you are negotiating a major treaty. Of course the minions to the real work, but to get momentum to push something through, a state visit gets the kind of positive press you need.

 

I actually knew a few old men who claimed that their villages got better treatment from Nazis than from the Soviets. Maybe some nazi officers were better than the others.
I’m not sure how much there was truth to it, but your theory seems to be right - if Nazis treated people in conquered territories better they wouldn’t have to deal with guerrilla warfare and would be able to better concentrate their errors on the front.

I believe that this is the conventional wisdom. I think it's a déformation professionnelle of all military people to think, as one fellow put it during the Vietnam War, when there was a lot of talking about 'winning the hearts and minds of the people, "Aw ... get 'em by the balls and the hearts and minds will follow". Although the real problem the Germans had was the worldview of the Nazis, which assigned the Slavs the role of being the servants of the German colonists who would move into the conquered territories.

Yes, Germans are fun. I know many good and friendly Germans, some I also call friends and some are even family.
Still as a nation/society, they lost the will to live. Not having kids means you do not believe in the futute and are not willing to spend energy for it.

 

The Soviets and Nazis were oppressors. Both brought misery and death. You're going to pick from them, are you?

The U.S. and the Soviets, with a little help from their friends, took out the Germans, and then the Americans, with help from their friends, took out the Soviets. The world is better off without Nazis and Soviets. A lot better off.

Hard to know where to begin. Why should a German care all that much if identifying as a German is less important in the future than identifying as, say, a European, or even a world citizen? If a German decides tomorrow he or she is a European and not a German, does that mean in essence a German passed away?

I think it's beginning to dawn on people, we need fewer of ourselves on the planet and it would be dandy if we had a much lower birthrate. Shouldn't Germans want to participate in an effort to cut the world population?

There is a problem with that.
Africans, Central/South Americans and Asians are not on a quest to cut down human population.
Also, germans and Americans are having fewer kids not because they have a noble quest of cutting down on human population, but because it’s getting expensive to have kids. People in 1st world countries should really lower their expectations - you can’t send all of your kids to Harvard, nor should you expect to. Most of the people have to do sacrifices when they raise kids and you will have to too when you raise your own. Hoping to preserve exact same lifestyle when you have kids is stupid. And that’s what causes people in 1st world countries to give birth to fewer kids and later in life. So, pretty much greed and selfishness kills off white people.

When whites die off and the rest assimilates with other races, the world population will not be lower than today. It will be higher and it will start growing even faster.
