I'd have to agree that forced sterilization is not a bridge that we want to cross. It's hard telling where that sort of precedent could lead.

What I'd propose instead, is a limit to the amount of welfare one could receive, based upon a number of children. If the welfare recipient decides to continue having children beyond that point, (*)(*)(*)(*) 'em, allow Darwinism to take it's course. It sounds cruel, but I don't care... at some point you simply need to allow people to suffer the results of their actions.

 

I agree. If you continue to enable, it only sends out the message to others that they too can be rewarded.
Do the opposite, and it sends out a very different message.

 

I find it telling that you left out the mother of eugenics Margaret Sanger and the Progressive movement of the early 20th century here in the US. However, as bad as Woodrow Wilson and FDR were, we can be grateful that they didn't fully embrace idiots like her here in the US. Unfortunately, the Nazis, Soviets and Chinese did.

 

Indeed. If people understood that there was a cut off point, and they'd be obligated to foot the bill beyond that, they might be inclined to consider their actions. If not, they could face the reality of their actions, just as the rest of us do.

I think the Christian parable which compares the difference between giving someone a fish as opposed to teaching them how to fish, is relevant here. I think our welfare programs should contain a lot of rehabilitative education elements.

Actually I've had quite a bit of experience with "the system". Orphanages can be bad or good. They were incredibably important back in the day prior to welfare---when parents who couldn't depend on the government did put their children into orphanages. My grandfather and his three sisters were adopted out of an orphanage. He didn't have bad experience. The city I live near has an orphanage---about 20 kids live there. Its a pretty cool place.

Our system encourages irresponsability and nurtures gangsters and criminals. I would say all options are on the table.

 

A private woman tried to do something like that... offering crack addicts money if they voluntarily sterilized themselves. Got sued into timbuktu and forced to shut down her clinic as memory serves. I will try and find an article.
