States with strictest lockdowns ruined livelihoods — without saving lives

At a time when politics has become vicious and national, Americans would benefit from looking at leaders’ competing visions at the state level. Who is actually making people’s lives better or worse, and how? The public may be starting to do so as Govs. Ron DeSantis, Gavin Newsom, and Andrew Cuomo have attracted national attention for — well — a variety of reasons. But their controversies only scratch the surface. One of the important and under-appreciated stories of the last year is how pro-lockdown states ruined the livelihoods of millions of Americans without any lives saved to show for their heavy-handed interventions.

Most states with the strictest COVID lockdowns destroyed millions of jobs for their citizens, while those with modest, targeted rules are largely experiencing low levels of unemployment even for normal times.

The five states with the strictest lockdowns over the last year — Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York — have an average unemployment rate of 8.06 percent. In the five states with the lightest restrictions, unemployment sits at just 3.48 percent — lower than the 3.5 percent national rate before the pandemic hit the US...
Progressive politicians across the country assumed unique powers in the last year, took away personal freedoms, and destroyed livelihoods without saving lives, but they’ve still yet to admit their historic failures or be held accountable for committing them.

The public should ask why progressives should attempt to bring major change to the nation, let alone govern any state government, when they have failed families so starkly across the country.

The contrast between red states and blue ones has never been greater. Freedom vs Jack boot control. Low unemployment vs high unemployment. Booming economy vs recession. Lock downs saved no lives and cost lots of jobs.

This article is exactly right. There was already the issue of taxes and spending as well as demographics favoring red states over blue ones. Now with the pandemic effects lockdowns and government control and the ability to work remotely the move to red states and rural areas of blue ones from the cities only accelerated.

The States that are most restrictive are Democrat states....they love big, authoritarian government. Let them wallow in what they voted for. Just don't move to a Red state...the only thing closed in Red states is Democrat relocation. No vacancy, we're all full.

It wasn't done well, but I fault states more for not being diligent and harsh enough. This is one of the areas in which I think DC fell short in not having a coordinated national strategy. It should have been more along the lines of "Okay everybody stockpile everything you need for 3 weeks and on March 15 we are shutting everything but morgues, EMS, and hospitals down for the next 3 weeks." This faux lockdown stuff was a disaster in all regards. For instance, I worked all through Stage 1 in my state, didn't need a mask, and the only place I couldn't go to I normally went to was the barbershop. Then there was the stage 2 "partial reopening" i.e. masks and barber shops were open again. That is the extent of my "lockdown"

Thank God Biden was not President at the beginning. We’d have had a lot more dead and one constitutional crisis after another. Not harsh enough? Lol!

The reverse could be said about blue states. I’m a conservative in a blue state.

Has nothing to do with Biden or Trump. It has to do with common sense that the faux lockdowns weren't going to work when just about everybody but the barber and his yoga instructor were "essential" workers.

That wasn’t the case in California. The initial lockdowns were strict and enforced at least in the most urban areas of the state. It was a bit more lax in rural areas because the state is so big and they couldn’t control us in the outlying areas or move enforcement from heavy impacted cities to be super spreaders to to rural areas they wanted to crack down upon. Lots of article in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Sacramento Bee about Trump supporting rural openly flouting everything even if the elected government there towed the line on paper. They were going to crack down hard on us in the fall when we finally reached purple but before they could the second wave hit the urban areas harder than the first did and we skated.

Bottom line is that the disease is a national disaster caused by China and states that went all in on lockdowns and mask mandates actually fared worse than states that didn’t or ended theirs much earlier. It is a viral pandemic and only vaccines and natural attrition of it over time was going to be the real key along with therapeutics to treat symptoms once infected.

I think people in India and Brazil are currently figuring out the consequences of letting covid rip through the population, based on the mantra of personal freedom. I am not sure waiting for a hospital bed being unable to get oxygen while dying because of an inability to breathe is a fun way to go.

I will agree that the Trump shutdown and reopen guidelines were a failure

Ah, but doing that gave their governors power, while getting their people used to the idea that the state could tell them when they could breathe. The left values that kind of power, as do weak, spineless imitations of real people who have massive inferiority complexes.

You would need to compare their UE rates before and after the lockdowns to know if they had an impact.

So the OP claimed that the lockdowns failed to save lives... without the OP comparing the number dead from states that had heavy lockdowns to the death rate from covid. I don’t understand how the OP can start talking about lockdowns being failures without even mentioning the number dead.

Did you notice the article in the OP never tells us which 5 states it is using as having the least strict lockdown rules?

Aside from the count of those who died, which I've not researched for this-
It's abundantly clear that lockdowns have done extensive damage. It has bankrupted businesses, laid off millions of jobs, and among personal things- resulted in many people who need to be active just to maintain health losing ground. Lots of suicides, lots of people losing it and becoming violent. Never in history- with far more devastating diseases, has any nation quarantined people who were not sick, and shut down the means of economic support. The economic real price for this has been being postponed with government check, eviction protection and the like- but you had better believe this has created an economic illusion, a bubble as we say- and it is going to collapse at some point. It's going to be ugly; such that few alive today have ever seen anything close.

I spent this past weekend hiking through the Oregon Coastal mountains. Seeing the big beautiful trees all decked out in their spring green splendor and colorful blossoms. Listening to the birds sing, watching the many crawling things along the trails, the little brooks and streams, the little ponds where lilies where just coming alive. The flowering plants and the little creatures who fly about them. The sweet spring air filled my lungs with all the freshness of the new season. Knowing full well that such beauty is only possible because of the environmental protections made possible by the more liberal elements in our society. It is quite clear why y’all like to hate on Oregon. Y’all are jealous you do not live in paradise.

I am quite satisfied with what I have been voting for.

It is almost funny, Republican states passing new authoritarian laws, as the throng cheers on and defends the police who commit brutal acts, as conservatives laughably insists, no, it is the Left who are the authoritarians. I mean, you have to know, right?

And Oregon's infection rate just steadily climbs. It is now up to about three times what it was in middle March.

Yet many have thrived just fine. Pretty sure that average incomes are up and rising. Most people recognized the health risks and took necessary precautions. As more and more become vaccinated, more and more opens up, soon enough and we will be on our way. Biden seems to have chosen the correct path. His infrastructure plan, if implemented, will make America much greater than the moras the wrong-wing prefers we take. It has got to hurt. As much as I am pleasantly surprised that Biden has stepped up to the plate, proven his mettle, it has to be a horrible disappointment that Biden has failed to play the role that Republicans so desperately wanted him to play.
