    WASHINGTON —

The Supreme Court on Monday put on hold a lower court ruling that Alabama must draw new congressional districts before the 2022 elections, boosting Republican chances to hold six of the state’s seven seats in the House of Representatives.

The court’s action, by a 5-4 vote, means the upcoming elections will be conducted under a map drawn by Alabama’s Republican-controlled legislature that contains one majority-Black district, represented by a Black Democrat, in a state in which more than a quarter of the population is Black.

Once again we see the wisdom of the Supreme Court in light of Democrat attempts to redraw districs based on skin color.

This also increases the likelihood of the GOP retaining house seats.

Stacey Abrams, who has distanced herself from Biden will likely be upset to hear this.

    Justice has been served.

All our hopes of making Alabama a blue state have just been dashed.

Typical GOP anti-democratic behavior, cementing their minority rule. 34% of Alabama voters are Dem or lean Dem, but the Dems will get only 14% of the Alabama House seats. I call that disenfranchising voters, or the GOP picking their voters, rather than the other way around.

The REAL travesty is that the Supreme Court didn't uphold the lower court's decision, predictably along party lines. The SC is quickly becoming a partisan charade, instead of being a dignified institution.

Stacey Abrams (from Georgia) is obsessively "upset" over events in Alabama?:bored:
    Cool...

An expected decision since Trump packed The Court with Extreme RW Reactionaries.

According to at least one justice who wrote a supporting opinion, the issue is that they want to hear the full case.

I somewhat doubt that. My bet is they are just running out the clock.

    BUT, who knows??

Maybe our radical right and highly political Supreme Court won't totally reject the idea of representation of the people.

In that case, Georgia may need to go back to being a representative democracy!

It really seems that at one time America had the idea that we're all equal and that our form of government was a representative democracy.

THEN, the competition had to do with who had ideas that the majority believed in.

Now, it's a matter of whether Republicans can hang onto power by their ability to rig elections.

That sure saves them from having to gin up any positive ideas!!

So, i guess you take the same offense with the gerrymandered New York map? Or is it ok to map out Republican votes?

The question is, are you in favor of gerrymandering, or NOT?

How about getting behind voter rights legislation???

Whining about NY when a good number of Republican states are gerrymandering is seriously pathetic.

Yes, I disagree with ANY attempt of gerrymandering. You can look in the recent thread on NY and my comments there. The difference, however, is that the GOP is winning the gerrymandering race, because the Dems have unilaterally disarmed in large states like CA.

Back to Alabama, however. Here are the maps:

Now,tell me this is not stealing of a congressional seat. Tell me that with a straight face.

What the dems were doing is both illegal and unconstitutional.

And lol about disenfranchised voters as Biden let's in millions of illegals who will change representation at the federal level.

Well duh! It could have cost them a seat to let the natives actually get fair and honest representation. The RWNJ's on the court aren't paid to let that happen.

Representation in the House is based on population, according to the constitution. In Alabama, it seems the Republican voting population is more equal than the Dem voting population, based on the highly-partisan maps drawn by the GOP. This is anti-constitutional.

Overall, in 2016, the GOP received only 49% of House votes, vs. 51% for Dems, yet, they had a 30 seat majority. This is how the GOP wins, be stealing elections.

    Don't be ridiculous.

That little blue finger sliding up into the Birmingham area? That was some pretty creative editing on the Alabama's GOP's part.

But if this is okay with you, it must be okay when the Democrats gerrymander too?

The really undemocratic thing here is your thinking that there is value in creating voting ghettos. Apply your own analysis to somewhere like CA where CA has fundamentally attempted to ignore the 35-40% of folks in CA who aren't democrats. You seem to think that's ok, even when CA goes out of its way to slice up districts to ensure that republican enclaves aren't allowed to be represented. The real travesty was a radical democrat decided that their view of race drawn ghettos was appropriate.

Gosh,... where were you when CA created their map, or NY? How hypocritical of democrats to not call out their own gerrymandering when it pumps up artificial representation they feel it is appropriate..
