WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a restrictive New York gun law in a major ruling for gun rights.

The justices’ 6-3 decision is expected to ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation’s largest cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Boston — and elsewhere. About a quarter of the U.S. population lives in states expected to be affected by the ruling, the high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade.

In their decision, the justices struck down a New York law requiring people to demonstrate a particular need for carrying a gun in order to get a license to carry one in public. The justices said the requirement violates the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.”

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority that the Constitution protects "an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.”

California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island all have similar laws likely to be challenged as a result of the ruling. The Biden administration had urged the justices to uphold New York’s law.

In most of the country gun owners have little difficulty legally carrying their weapons in public. But that had been harder to do in New York and the handful of states with similar laws…

Now, all those anti-gun slave states can get with the program and join the rest of the country in the 21st Century; kicking and screaming, if necessary.

Is the SC totally tone deaf, or what? Looks like the 6 conservative judges want to make sure that there will be even more armed people wandering around at all times. Looks like the gun nuts are winning with the activist RW judges who are currently on the bench.

The law is the law. If you don't like the law, change it. Don't expect judges to change it for you.

The progressive left had grown accustomed to that. Having activist courts impose what a legislative body accountable to the people would not.

The right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed and that means they can carry in public. You want them to rule according to your leftist screed instead of ruling Constitutionally. It can't get any clearer than this...Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority that the Constitution protects "an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.”

This is probably the clearest ruling on the 2nd amendment to date. Great victory for Constitutionlist!

Idiocy, so now, with the gun homicide rate rising, and majority of Americans supporting stricter gun regulation, the six or seven States with the lowest gun violence rates in the country now have to conform to the lunacy of the Trump Court

And to show how stupid the ruling is they included a provision where guns can be restricted in specific areas, meaning the right Thomas thinks is absolute ain’t absolute per their own ruling. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see what those States will do next, pass legislation making nearly everywhere in the State specific areas

    Ruling is straight up idiocy

What's your beef? They upheld YOUR right to bare arms too.. You keep supporting the loss of your rights and soon you be like Australia where the long arm of tyrannical Gubmint goons beat your ass for even voicing your opinion!!

Last time I looked, the Supremacy clause still existed... Are you suggesting it doesn't?

Hilarious! Just wait until the reality of this hits the streets. The SC just made large cities ungovernable.

This is a highly liberal court to be sure. The law was 100 years old.

And you think this ruling either way would have effected the homicide rate? Try and comprehend, illegal gun owners/thugs and felons do not adhere to the letter of the law. So the law is actually a win for you "Well assuming you are a legitimate gun owner" and every other law abiding American..

The horror... Folks can defend themselves against the woke criminal mob... As for "activist", no. Just settling in the law that elitists don't get to bend the rules to favor them anymore. I thought you folks were all about "equity" these days...

You mean the SC wants more legally armed people wondering around so that they can actually defend themselves against the massive crime increase in that state!

What reality, thugs/felons and illegal gun owners carrying concealed weapon would have changed if the decision was upheld? I don't think you have a grasp or can differentiate between law abiding and laws breakers
