how long can you keep a dead cow with no refrigeration before it goes bad, and I doubt many people know how to smoke the meat...

I figure you'd need to have a 2-3 year supply of food 5-10 acres of farmland (80 would be better) plus two or three seasons of seed and be able to stay out of sight for those 2-3 yrs...

Mm-hmm, they'll go after the livestock alright. But these predators know preppers have an arsenal of guns and they know where they are. They need more guns. But wait! Maybe they'll submit to an Obama background check?

Yes, yes...but Bear Gryls (sp?) says, " PRWF---Please Remeber What's First in a disaster."

    Protection
    Rescue
    Water
    Food

What good are your mountains of food and and water and your own hides if they are not protected?

I would like to also ad how important the "BOB" or "GHB" is right know in Watertown. Some work swing and night shifts and with the City on virtual shut down decisions must be made. Camp in place or drive home if aloud.

This is a sad situation but a great learning opportunity. I imagine many got caught off guard.

Silly response and harmful. Mobilizing 300 million to any one location will not happen. I suggest doing some research on this exact scenario, which is discussed extensively on some great forums.

Yes lawless people will exist, especially when hunger is the motivator, and with this action groups will move forward to restore law just the same.

Groups now exist, provisions in place, plans in place. Doctors, nurses, farmers, ranchers, Tech nerds, Hunters, Scientist and so on.

Mans nature is to survive and protect.

this the thing I noticed about preppers they have no concept of logistical reality...when food supply quickly dries up in the cities they aren't going to stay put in their urban homes waiting to starve they'll head to the rural areas looking for food, 300 million very well armed urban dwellers will quickly exhaust and overwhelm rural areas in their search for food...

law won't exist, law abiding fathers are not going to watch their children starve, if the preppers don't share their resources they'll have it taken from them...

all delusional if they think they can survive...

sure and throughout history the desperate hungry hordes(huns, mongols, goths, vandals etc) have repeatedly overrun those communities that resisted them...

some delusional preppers I've seen on TV, a women with her bug out bag who believed she could trade her body for food, seriously if you're a woman in that situation you're literally screwed, men won't need to negotiate with her they take whatever she has and her body with out her permission...

another prepper from Boston who had a bug out RV parked in a rural area north of Boston... and how many people live in the immediate vicinity? millions, and they'll all be headed out into the countryside, his non-armored RV will be over run instantly regardless of his weapons...

unless you know how to live off the land in the most isolated places on the continent you are not likely to survive...

Now you are being long winded and ignorant. You know nothing of me but assume. My guess, you will not survive very long.

With a livestock trailer and a bucket of feed your cattle would be alive. And 80 acres is a lot of ground (just try walking it). They could sneak into 80 acres and steal your livestock. Ya gotta sleep sometime.

Hungry people would eat a cow raw. And you could trade for anything else you needed with food. You could keep cattle in a garage if you kept them fed and watered. That is one reason to have livestock. You do not have to keep livestock cold on the hoof.

There are many books on salting meat, smoking meat, preserving meat by drying, preservng meat in vinegar...etc.

Just because you don't know something doesn't mean someone else does not.

yes but how many people are going to run down to the local library during an Apocalypse/civil upheaval to take out a book on preserving meat?.... reading/research isn't going to be high a priority on things to do when the immediate priority is your next meal...

and then there are the other problems you will run out of salt, how many of us know how to make vinegar? where do you find yeast?...

there are people who know how to preserve meat but I quite confident I could ask a random 100 or even 1000 urban dwellers and no one would know...how many people still know how to preserve fruit and vegetables? I recall it being done but that was decades ago, my mother knew but she's dead so no info there and even she stopped doing it 50yrs ago...

we have become so specialized we as individuals for the most part lost the ability to feed ourselves....

and you're being arrogant if you think have the wisdom of the world in your head and can survive an apocalyptic event, that's what I've noticed about preppers is how over confident they are and how little they actually know...

I've met people who can go into a Canadian forest in winter with only their clothes on their back and an axe and survive, how about you? can you do that ? do you have that level of knowledge? I don't, and other than a few aboriginals I haven't met any others who can...

or I could be the one taking the food off your shelves...

It may be a good idea to learn some things now. Things like the fact that rice has a long shelf life and you can put a lot of rice in a small place.
You can find all you would ever care to know right here on the net. This is where I learned to render lard.
I reckon most supermarkets and grociery stores will be raided first. Then the police will shoot to kill for looting.

But I do think if things get really bad most of us will not survive. The lakes and rivers will be fished out, the woods will be hunted out,and people will start eating each other.

I guess I would call myself an unemployment prepper. And a grocery bill saver. I am gaining a better ability to feed myself and my family every year.

Just bought a bull and a neighbor is looking for another cow for us.....he knows his cattle and can find a good deal.

ya short term disasters I've discussed with mrs wyly and we agreed with you rice seems to be the best way to go, you can buy a lot of for relatively little and it's easy to store, water is readily available. As long as someone doesn't take it from us we could last a reasonable length of time...any situation so severe that it would be years in duration most likely becomes unsurvivable...

agreed I hear looney tune types here where I live claiming they'll head out into the mountains and hunt but that game will disappear real quick with 4 million people looking for the same meal...I expect in a total civil breakdown most of that 4 million will be dead in a year...

at the tail end of WW2 my parents and older siblings had virtually nothing to eat they even ate grass, dug through German garbage pits for scraps, people were dropping dead from starvation the germans cleaned out everything and this lasted only a relatively short 6 months...even pets disappeared, people loved their cats and dogs but the neighbours had no such affections for them, tasted great in a stew...luckily they never reached the Leningrad stage of people eating people...

I knew from previous posts you did some farming it's a sensible approach, practicing self sufficiency which is the key to long term survival, your challenge will be to keep it...

That sounds like my childhood. (I told you I am old.) No electricity, no running water, no indoor plumbing. In those days such houses would be described as "three rooms and a path." Every drop of drinking, washing, and bathing water had to be carried in a bucket from the windmill. Cooking and heating was by wood stoves, air-conditioning was open the south windows and sweat. Lighting was a kerosene lamp, you tend to go to bed early. I can't believe people do that for FUN! I also can't believe I am so old that my childhood reads like a history book.

Seriously, an outhouse would work and should not be illegal unless you're located within city limits. The downside to outhouses is that spiders love them, and all I have ever seen have cracks in the walls for the icy wind to blow through. Not too handy if nature calls in the middle of the night either.

I've experienced all that as well still have scars on my hand from when as a toddler I burned it on our wood burning stove...and we had outhouses in the city back then, in winter no one lingered in the outhouses at -40...
